Member 14 | Subject: First timer hammered by adrenalineI just ran my first sprint (Dewey Beach Traithlon) this past Saturday. What a blast! Almost 1100 total participants and 250 were first timers! I was in the 13th (last) wave and was amazed at how pumped up I got from watching wave after wave go before me into the surf, and then hear them call my wave... and then countdown 5..4..3..2..1 and then the horn souning - man I was gone! I know I was ahead of everyone for at least 75 yards- but at 100 yards I thought I was going to drown for lack of oxygen. My 265lbs kept me afloat - but I was a bit nervous. The worst was coming out of the water - fighting through the chest high waves - sprinting out of the water across the beach and over the dunes (a pretty good run mind you) I thought I was goint to have a heart attack right then and there - but I couldn't slow down - I was too pumped up! I't didn't end there - all through the race I was so psyched to be actually in a race - a real race - a triathlon - that I pushed way too hard, by the time I go to the run I was done - it was the most miserable 3.4 miles I ever had to run - until I saw the finish line - and then boom - I was sprinting again - I didn't even tell myself to sprint - I was just sprinting. I had no idea adrenaline was such an enemy of calm, cool, collected, efficiently run triathlons. It might not have been pretty - but I did it. |

Champion 6503![]() ![]() ![]() NOVA - Ironic for an Endurance Athlete | Subject: RE: First timer hammered by adrenalineI read your race post. Awesome time for your first "sprint"! That race has a longer swim than the typical sprint, which is now 400 meters. Also, great job swimming without a wetsuit in the ocean on your first tri! I am heading into my third, and the ONLY way that I would swim in open water, especially the ocean, is with a wetsuit and a personal escort. Congrats! |

Member 14 | Subject: RE: First timer hammered by adrenalineThanks for all the positive feedback. I've posted my times in the race report - bike was clearly my strongest event - I thought swimming would be. Yeah, I might just be hooked - it was blast. Once I got over my fears of the unknowns (and my wife's comments about my "unitard" - it's a tri-suit sweetheart) and finishing the race, I really can't wait to work toward the next one. |

Expert 724![]() ![]() ![]() Simi Valley | Subject: RE: First timer hammered by adrenalineAwesome job! I had the most fun in my first swim, but my wife said I looked miserable coming out of the water - just takes a sec for the big boys to get their bearings. One thought on reading your comment here (although you did not say much about this in your race report): if you were "fighting through the chest high waves" you stood too soon - you can ride those waves and can actually swim really until your hands are brushing sand. It takes practice in the waves, but you can be far more efficient, and pass people, by body surfing into the knee high water. Sounds like with the lessons learned you will do great in your next one

Member 14 | Subject: RE: First timer hammered by adrenalineYou know, now that you mention it - I saw that category in the race report - about riding the waves -duhoow! I grew up body surfing - what was I thinking? I think that's the point - I wasn't thinking - I was haulin' it out of the water like a wild man - I'll know better next time! |

ITs too easy when you feel good and your not into your groove to just get swept up with all the people who are faster than you. Good job on the race. Atleast you were not like me after my first race. I was so tired from the swim I could barely even bike and I had to walk the run completely |

Can't imagine they make one that would fit me comfortably - not to mention one that I could get on and off easily. It seems to meoit would slow me down by restricting my swimming motion and the T1 time. Why do so many Triathletes use them? Not to mention one more thing to buy and maintain, just doesn't make sense to me. |

Master 1993![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Riverside, IL | Subject: RE: First timer hammered by adrenaline^^^ The above post is SO TRUE!!! I was one of those people that thought I would never need to buy a wetsuit. HA! All it took was signing up for an Olympic distance tri to convince me that I needed one. And boy, was I ever glad that I did, too! The air temp on the morning of my race was in the low 50's...Brrrrrr! Even though the water temp was in the low 70's...I would have been freezing, if I hadn't wore a wetsuit. Infact, it was so chilly that morning...I put my wetsuit on about an hour before my start...just to keep warm! I was darn glad I spent the money on one. Plus the fact that it was a big investment, will help motivate me to keep on using it next season. In regards to the OP...I'm positive that you can find a wetsuit to fit you. And I wouldn't worry to much about getting it on/off. Just allow yourself about 10 minutes prior to the start of the race to get into the suit properly. Making sure you have the suit on correctly (pulled up all the way) is the key factor in having freedom of movement in the shoulders & arms. Getting it off is no big deal...really. Once the suit gets wet, it will be a snap to get off. Not to mention the adrenaline rush will help aid in getting it off quickly. Edited by nscrbug 2008-09-19 1:29 PM |

Extreme Veteran 541![]() ![]() Virginny | Subject: RE: First timer hammered by adrenalinegreat job on your first tri! i am following the morphing of the topic onto wetsuits. I have been doing triathlons for fiver years now and have thus far successfully avoided needing a wetsuit, including one swim where the water was 67 deg. I have plenty of body fat to keep me warm and boyant, haha. But I have never done one in the ocean. I may cave eventually... but I despise stockings and I think a wetsuit must be worse! |
