My big new year's resolution is to get fit. One of the footnotes of that resolution is to compete in my first Tri. I was on the Mens Health forum trying to figure out how to lose my gut, and I saw a link to this website. So, here I am.

I like to swim. I'm not too bad. I swim the 500 twice a year for my fitness test at around 7 to 8 minutes depending. I like to bike. I used to be a bike mechanic a hundred years ago, I Mt. biked all the time, never did the road thing, before my son was born 4 years ago. Then I got off the bike and haven't been on since. I hate running. I'm slow, it's painful, and I blob around out of breath. Not very good for the ole self-esteem.

Anyway, I just turned 32 a few weeks ago. I'm in the Navy, currently in Japan for a few months. I've been working out and trying to lose weight and get fit. I've been swimming more, and started spinning class a few times a week. I need to run more, and when I say run, I really mean jog at a pathetically slow pace, but I really dislike it, so it's easy to make excuses not to do it.

Thats me. Here I am. The name is CRASH.

Welcome to the gang there Crash...hopefully your moniker is only a figurative one, and not a forecast of what's to come! Hang with this group a while and maybe the running will get easier. OK, maybe at least tolerable then! There's lots of good advice and motivation here. Let us know how training is going and what your goals are for the season. Good to have new faces on board.

Welcome to the site Crash. There are a few of us here who feel the same way about running as you!! But we are diligently working at it. Start really slow to avoid leg injuries -- like walk/jog for a while. I suggest Jeff Galloway's book -- simple title I can't remember now but something like "Running".

Good luck

I started out a runner in high school, then I went to couch potato. When I first started back running, it hurt and I hated it. As I went along month to month, my weight got lower and lower and the running has got easier and easier. Three years and 50lbs lighter and I feel like a "runner" again. Stick with it and it will only get better!

Hi Crash, welcome aboard. Do not think of yourself as a "pathetically slow" runner. You run at your own pace and will learn to run faster at your own pace. You are already one up on most of us with your swimming leg and your cycling background seems to be good. Just make sure that you get the best running shoes to suit you and concentrate on your breathing as you jog. Start by walking/running and if that is too much, just walk briskly until you can manage a jog or a trot.
