Subject: Bike shopping, any recommended?

So I have been doing a lot of research on different bike. I am looking at getting a new bike instead of used. (I know I can get used cheaper but I much prefer to get new due to warrenty, bike shop relationships, and a few other factors). I am looking to probably get the bike this fall or early winter when things start to go on sale but have been doing a lot of research. Now of course I will test ride any bike and get it fit before I buy and I will undoubtably go with the bike that fits me best. That being said I am trying to decide which bikes to actually look at in person in order to make that determination. I am shopping in the 1500 dollor or so range give or take a few hundred and have narrowed it down to several options. What I want to know is anyone who has owned/ridden any of these bikes that can comment on them.

QR Tequilo: Heard it is a good all around bike but one of my LBS mechanics has had several of the frames come back with manufacturing issues and QR was not the best with Customer service at fixing/replacing them. Hence this store stopped carrying QR bikes at all.

Felt S32: The reviews are, for the most part, quit positive for Felt, great Company, great Customer service and good technology. As this is the entry level Tri Bike from them though some concerns have been a weak fork that because unstable at higher speeds/downhill. Does anyone have an experience of this. Since I ride hills a lot I need a front end that will stay stable no matter what.

Trek Equinoxx 7: Trek is a known dependable brand for road bikes but not sure about the TT series. The equinoxx seems to do ok in the reviews but is slightly more expensive than others I am looking at but it does have a decent component set with all 105, including the crank.

Cervelo P1 Ultegra SL: Cevalo has known quality for TT bikes, Slightly more expensive, again, than some of the others but with a mostly Ultegra SL component set it seems like it would be well worth the extra expense.

Scott Speedster: as a road bike I would have to budget some additional money for clip on Aero bars and a new seat post set up to get a more aggressive/Aero stance but Scott has a solid reputation that hopefully is well earned. This bike (probably the S30) comes with a solid component set and Frame set up.

Specialized Alleze Compact Sport: Again a road bike so I would have to add in the bars and seatpost. The Alleze has more of an upright geometry so getting a good aero position could prove troublesome to me. The upside is the good price and the full 105 component setup along with Specialized great brand quality. I have known several people to happily compete on these bikes before is really why I am considering it.

As you can see I am not looking for a top of the line Carbon set up. I want something to replace my Trek Hybrid Commuter which I am happily using for this first season of Tris. I want something I can actively use for training and to compete on for the next 2-3 years before I decide to upgrade again if I want/need too. I do plan on doing longer races, at least a HIM or 2 and hopefully an IM in the next 2-3 years as well for an idea of the distance I want to use it for. All comments are welcome as far as experience with any of these bikes or brands. I have lots of time to make my decision in.

I ride a trek equinox 7 that is two years old and the only thing that I have done to it is change out the cockpit out with an oval concepts cockpit. Overall I am very happy with my trek.

Did the same recently, the reviews I read on Felt were all good but there is something about a Cervelo. The P1 would be my vote.

You can a lot good deals now on the 08, even the 09. I think buying new is a good idea, you LBS will help you get fitted, and help with routine service.

I too am looking for my first decent bike (upgrading from a hybrid so baby steps I guess).  I am looking for a road bike primarily so I can still easily take ride with the wife along the bike path, etc.  Then maybe in the future I will make the upgrade to a tri-bike.  I just came across the Scott Speedster S30 too and plan on taking it for a test ride this week.  I'll let you know how it goes (even though I may like it and you may not).  They actually sell this bike at REI so that's where I am testing it out this week since REI is closer to my house than any bike store.

As far as the scott goes... you can get a CR1 for around $1700. That would be my vote in the road bike department. My roommate has an S30 and likes it fine though. I'm not a fan of the Allez at all.

I ride an 06 S32 and it is a good bike, especially for the money, If you are wanting a tri bike to grow with, I think it is a great choice. The Trek and Cervelo are both nice, but you will def. pay for name, and between the two i'd rather have the P1 than the Trek.

That said, all of the bikes you listed are fine bikes, what you really need is to buy the one that fits you the best.

Watch www.bonktown.com They have KILLER deals on Kuota tri bikes during the day. It's one item at a time, so you have to be logged in when it comes up, but they had a $2500 K-factor for $899 today. You could eBay it for more than you paid and turn a profit.

Per my Original post I will get the one that fits me best. What I am looking for here is others personal experience with the bikes, if they had any problems with them such as instability at speed or manufacturing defects, and their overall level of satisfaction with the bikes. If one or two of the bikes have consistant problems based on other experience then I may not consider riding them even and stick to the other few. Otherwise I could end up spending days at a few different LBS in the area (not that that is necessarily a bad thing...Just have other things to do usually )

Another good bike in your price range is the Cannondale Synapse 5. It has 105 components and a little better wheel set and crank than some of the other brands come with. I put carbon stryke aero bars on and it fits my frame really well. I'm 5' 10" and 155.

Personally I'm glad I went with a road bike instead of a tri bike. It's just more versatile for me. If I had the will to invest the money in multiple bikes I'd love to have a tri bike, but the Cannondale road bike with good bars has been serving me really well. I did hear however that they are moving their manufacturing to China. Glad I got one that was still made in the USA.

I've just spent over a year with one of these. I have no idea what you're talking about. I've had it up to about 48 MPH and no "unstable" other than damn that's fast for a bike.

Oh, since I got a new Felt, if you're looking for a 2008, 54 cm S32 I might have one for about 1/2 MSRP that only has about 1200 miles on it for sale. PM me if you're interested.

I ride a scott and love it! I went in first to get a Trek and after riding the scott I was hooked! Saved a few hundred bucks too.
