Subject: Penalty Wave
Hello,

I just completed my first Tri this month and had a question about something I saw in the race results.  What is a Penalty Wave and what do the different numbers represent (1-6)?

Thanks!
Mike

That's a new one on me. What race, and do you have a link to the results?

The race was the '1st Marlborough Sprint Tri' in Massachusetts.  Here's a link to the results:

The column shows up in the individual results page.

Thanks,

It is two columns, one called "Penalty" and one called "Wave."

The penalty column is any time penalty they received, the wave is the wave # they started in.

My guess my looking at the results. Penalty and Wave are two different rows.

There is a row for penaltys in case a participants violated a rule and there is a row for Wave to designate which wave they started in at the begining of the race

This is a new USAT penalty procedure.  Offenders must stand along the course route for their assessed penalty minutes and wave on the other triathletes

When I first read that I was thinking of Marlboro cigarettes and thought they sponsored a triathlon, which I think would be awesome (just for the irony.  Wait we can have an Ironyman).  Your goody bag comes with a T-shirt, eletrolyte powder mix, and some smokes.

I was thinking it was similar to biathlons where you have to ski an extra loop for every shot you miss or some such.  That would really suck if they made me swim extra laps for a penalty, not that I would ever break a rule!
