Well, I did it - my first triathlon! I came back and filled in a race report yesterday but it is sadly lacking in detail. I did the "Tri For Fun" in Pleasanton, CA and there were no times recorded since it was just a "for fun" race so, I have no idea of my split times.
This is how it went down....
I arrived in Pleasanton at 4:30pm Friday, my daughter and her family as well as my third son and his family were already there waiting for me. By 7:30pm we were joined by my oldest son and his family and my second son and his girlfriend. We drove out to look at the park where the tri would be held then went out for dinner. With nine adults and three babies at our table, we had a great time but stayed up far too late. My daughter insisted on doing my hair in tight french braids and I hated it. I look terrible with no bangs! lol! But, in the end, it really helped. I did the 12 week couch to sprint plan
(and I HATE to admit it but 12 weeks ago I was not only completely sedentary but had gained 20 pounds, was smoking and had a resting heart rate of 109
), my oldest son didn't train at all and my second son was already in terrific shape and thrilled to be trying something new.
I woke up with a terrible sore throat, extremely congested. You have got to be kidding.... I'm sick today???? No way, that is stopping me. My two oldest sons and I arrived at the park at 5:30am, got our numbers, set up our transition areas, got our bodies marked, etc. and felt ready. The rest of the family arrived at 7am. My boys were in the second wave and I was in the fifth so, I was able to watch them take off on the swim and see my second son come out of the water before I had to hurry down the beach to the start area. I started my swim in the back of the pack after everything I have read and knowing how slow I am, I thought it would be best. I was surprised to be passing people on the swim and the kids said I actually came out of the water mid-pack. Transition went well, I grabbed my bike
(a 1995 Diamondback Expert TG - so, nothing fancy
) and left on the bike portion - which I LOVED! I passed sooo many people on the bike and it just felt fantastic! Which was a great thing because my running sucked! And my T2 sucked as well. I came in and there was no place to rack my bike and someone had not only racked their bike in my spot but their wheel was on top of my shoes and visor. I had to lean my bike up, move theirs and wiggle my things out, then find a place for my bike. Where I live, it is very flat..... this running on hills was really hard for me and I walked WAY too much. On top of that, I got a cramp in my right foot and my left hamstring hurt the entire time.
When I crossed the finish line my children and grandchildren were there cheering for me and my son handed me a bouquet of roses. The announcer not only announced my name but told me happy birthday and I was thrilled.
Three months ago I was in the worst shape of my life
(and I know better
) and I told my kids I wanted to do a triathlon for my 45th birthday. I am terribly unmotivated to work out but I am very competitive so, the best impetus for me is to compete in some way. We went to lunch and agreed that we will make this an annual event. Next year it will be me, my three oldest sons, my daughter and my two daughters in law. This year my daughter is pregnant, my daughters in law felt like they didn't have enough time to prepare and my third son had a badly broken femur a few months ago so, they couldn't compete with us. My son Casey and I are going to sign up for another event in October and I am going to amp up my running a lot in the meantime.
Here are our times:
Casey 1.03
Me 1.42
(my goal was under 2
)
Becher 1.48
