Well, after focusing all summer on training for the Grand Columbian I've decided to do Black Diamond instead. I have a time goal I want to hit for an HIM this season and BD seemed like the best bet.

Anyone else doing this race? I know a few have done it in the past.

I'll be there for the half iron distance.  It will be my "tune-up" race for IMAZ.  Woohoo!  Um, do you know anything about the course?  I haven't even looked to see if it's flat or hilly...

There are a few race reports that give some insight. I talked to my coach the other day about it as he has raced there a few times and he said it is one of the flatter HIM courses around. You can look at mapmyride.com and see the elevation graph for the course. Its less than 1,100 feet of climbing with only a few small hills. Pretty much big chain ring for most of the course.

I think the weather and temperature are going to be the biggest challenge. If its less than 55 degrees I'll probably take the extra time and put more clothing on in T1. The cooler temps actually help on the run. You are faster at 60 degrees than you are at 85. I have heard that the run is not flat but not real hilly either.

Hmmm I was going to do the grand columbian as well but might have to do BD. I just need more training time so we'll see. It sounds like a good idea though.

Hi Steve! I think we met at the dinner in Boise. I'm planning to do Black Diamond too. As long as it doesn't downpour on us like it did in Boise I'll be happy!

I did Black Diamond in 2007.

The course is pretty flat in the big scheme of things. There are a fair amount of rollers on the bike. The run is basically flat with one decent hill at the turn around.

I too am waffling between Grand Columbian and Black Diamond. I have never done Grand Columbian but what I know of the course I can say Black Diamond is probably the better bet for a fast time.

Be prepared for a fairly cold swim (probably 62 or so).

Hey Roni, the only way BD could be worse than Boise is if it snows. The cold swim doesn't bother me nor does running if cooler weather. The bike though is what I dread if it is cold. I guess I'd just put some long pants on and long sleeve jacket. Hope your training is going well.

I'll be doing the Black Diamond HIM.  I rode the course a few weeks back and was able to stay in the big chain ring the entire time except for one small hill immediately after the two out and backs (you'll hit the hill twice).  It is a MUCH faster course than Lake Stevens and I am really looking forward to (hopefully) posting a respectable bike split.

Heres hoping for dry conditions.

Well I'm out & my season is over. My training has gone great and I was ready for a huge PR but I have to have surgery on Thursday. Have a tumor in my abdomen that was discovered a few weeks ago. Looks non-cancerous but the surgery is still very invasive. At least 3 weeks recovery before starting over again. Kind of bummed but am thankful as it could have been worse. Hope you all have a good safe race.

Wow, what a bummer. Sending out good vibes for the biopsy on the tumor.

Be thinking of you during the race.

Wow, so sorry to hear that popsracer.  Prayers are with you and for a quick recovery.  Also, thanks for the BD info.  This will be my 2nd half and am hoping to do a better job than I did at Troika last year.  I got off the bike, stood up and said, "Uh oh..I've got no legs!".  So hopefully this one will be better.  Thanks again!
