Overall Rank = 36/330
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/27
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30 to eat some breakfast. Loaded the bottles with water and gatorade and brought the coffee along. Loaded up the bike and headed to the rez that was about 2 miles away. I should have ridden over.
Event warmup:

Jog and some pick ups. Didn't get on the bike.
Run
  • 19m 7s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my fastest 5k time ever. Weird, I actually held back for the first time and did very well! Imagine that. If only I did what I tell others to do.
I started out front and was 5th after mile 1. Passed 1 guy and another passed me. No one else passed me on this run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, crap it was awesome.
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Some dude almost ran me off the course trying to get on his bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 43m 43s
  • 17.3 miles
  • 23.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Fun to ride on the dam one once. It seemed windy in both directions.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder through out the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 18s
Comments:

I flew here. 18 seconds!
What would you do differently?:

Ah, nothing
Run
  • 21m 6s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where the wheels fell off. I started the second run in 2nd position and was passed by 2 others in my agegroup and 1 or 2 others in an older age group. I was toast, well my legs were. I hit the first hill and I knew I had nothing left. I was able to hold on to 4th place.
What would you do differently?:

I need to woork more hills. I should know that, I haven't run any!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and talked to people.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills for sure. Everything else was great!

Event comments:

Great food and drinks afterwards. I got to see many friends and met new ones. Darrin puts on great races, and to watch the pros. Shoot they fly!
Good to see Julia is alive and to see her husband Chris again.
I finally paced myself better on the run. I ran a 5:48 at the first mile instead of a 5:10 a blew myself up. I felt calm and relaxed the whole time.

Good race!

"What limited your ability to perform faster:

>>>The answer is "Running a 5k PR to open the race." The split between the first 5k and 2nd 5k shouldn't be more than say 10-15" a mile at your ability level. In reality you ran a 40:00+ 10k, which is still WELL below your capability. A 19:45 and a 20:15 would have yielded a better overall result right?  You have the engine, you just need to use that big noggin of yours! No matter how short the event, anything over 200m is still an endurance event. Warm up next time, on the bike and run, and use some strategy - your best and fastest racing is still in front of you!

I'm glad I have some one like you who is harder on me than me!  I do need to warm up on the bike, I agree.  I actually held back on the first run and a bit on the bike. I am still working on the whole Duathlon thing.  A run first is hard to figure out.  I will get there, Thanks for the advice, I do agree on the fact that I have a faster race in me!

Hey, if I didn't like you, I would let you just keep doing what you are doing ;-) - not that there is anyone I don't like - :-)

You probably were holding back, but you were probably amped up. I agree that duathlons are tough to gauge. I almost take Run #1 as a Z3/4 run, then really crank it up the 2nd run. I can inflict more pain on myself and the people around me that way. :-)

I know that, thanks!  I really felt like I was going slow on the first 5k.  The second one was a bit different course and a ton more hilly.  I felt real good until that first hill.  Anyway, I always enjoy reading your views because you have great insights.  Good luck at Memphis!  I bet you  are fired up.  Then I will see you at the Surf and Turf.

Did you get HR data for the first 5k? How did it compare to the 2nd one? Also, if you feel like you were just 'shot' look into complex carbs - if you had delpleted your glycogen stores, you wouldn't have had the fuel to give the engine more power. Thanks on Memphis - looking forward to it. And I will see you on the 29th. You might want to make the SnT A races - lots of great prizes this year - probably about $150 for the winner of each AG! ($125 coupon for trisports, TYR goggles, and maybe some more schwag as well, we are working on it. )

When are we racing head to head this season? :-)

No HR data.  I was looking at this as a training run.  I don't like to race in HR monitors unless it is Olymip Distance or longer.  I was shot because I have done absolutely zero hills.  I could pick it up again and catch people on the down hills.  Anyway.  Head to head competition will probably be Rattlesnake!  However, I am doing the double.  So, I don't know which you are doing.  As for SNT being an A race, I cannot compete with the swimmers at that distance.  My swim is better but not that good.  BTW  doesn't it start onthe 31st?  29th is memorial day.

After the wetsuit last year, I don't know how much luckier I can get!  HEEHEE.  At least the wetsuit will make me a bit faster.

Information. It's all information. Racing/training - whatever its all information. And it can be used to extrapolate data - you don't have to look at it when you are racing (not racing) a duathlon, just cover it up with tape if you don't want to see the HR.

So what are you going to do about that swim? Champions work their weaknesses. :-) Yup, I am calling you out on your swim.

31st is correct, I was getting ahead of myself!

Not sure I am racing Rattlesnake - I may be going to Steamboat the week after. We'll see.

I know that.  I was really not thinking about it before the race.  I wish I had that data now.  So you are correct.

Swimming-I have been bustin *** on the swim  I actually swam 4 days last week.  I am upping the distance and working on 1 muscular endurance swim per week, 1 anerobic endurance swim and 1 endurance swim with speed work added in.  I think I am getting faster by looking at my TT's every 4 weeks but can't get into that super fast category.  By calling me out you need to give me some pointers because I feel as though I am doing everything I can right now but would like to be faster. If nothing else, I am in good swim shape to not kill myself before my real race begins on the bike.

>>>>I am not trying to be correct, just trying to give you another tool for your toolbox. ;-)

Swimming-I have been bustin *** on the swim  I actually swam 4 days last week.

>>>I see that you have been swimming nearly every day! Awesome.

>>>I looked over your logs for the past 4 weeks. You swam almost every other day. That is the good news, and excellent in the frequency department. Now, the bad news is that your longest swim was 2,900 (I think). Guys in your AG are swimming 3k for the main set. Understand where I am coming from? If you are going to swim an endurance day, then swim an endurance day. The way I set it up is I swim 1 day of pacing, 1 day of endurance, and now that I am getting closer to race season, 1 day of speed. I like to see my athletes swim 1 day of 4-5k. That makes a huge difference. Take a bottle of your favorite energy drink, set it up on the side of the pool, and get ready to swim for 1:30. 1x per week. Here is your swim workout:
w/u: 400 - every other length is drill
8x50 on 20"rest
100/200/300/400/400/300/200/100 - all on 1:55. This is your send off for each one. Unless your t-Pace is Faster than 1:46 now? Anyway, on the way up the pyramid you swim t-pace, and on the way down you swim FASTER then T-Pace. So 1:45 on the way up, and 1:40-1:42 on the way down. Yup this should hurt. A lot. But it's how you get faster!

After the pyramid, swim an easy 100.
Then you swim 6x50 kick or drill ( I would say drill for you)
Then you are going to swim 3x300 on 20" rest pull with pads/buoy
An easy 100 cool down puts you at 4200.

THAT is a real swim workout. :-) I see that you are swimming the TB swim sets, and while they are ok, they teach you to swim like a triathlete and if you want to improve you need to swim like a swimmer. You should schedule this one in, 1x per week, and hopefully you'll see improvement over the course of the next month as you get ready for Nats! have fun and go get it!
