When was the last year for good music.  I had a talk with a co-worker today and he says that something happened to the music world around 1979 and there really hasn't been any good music since...

What does COJ say ??

There is always good music being put out.  Most of it never reaches mainstream radio however.

X3. Even as an old coot I'd have to say someone who makes a statement like that needs to get out more, literally and figuratively speaking.

I completely disagree.  The music has changed just like it always has.  Just because your favorite band has not made a good record since 1979, doesn't mean there isn't good music.  I listen to many different genres of music, and I actually am working on a program that gets new musicians a place to be heard in a great facility.  There is a lot of "POP" music that I do not listen to, because they use way too many processors to get perfect pitch and to change their voice.  Many use a drum machine rather than using an actual drummer and that bothers me also to some degree.

There are many new artist that have a greater understanding of music theory and they put that to very good use in their new songs.  I am a hard rocker, but I do struggle with some of the newer "rock", but I also think about how different we thought the music had changed back then also.

Everyone has their own idea of what good is.

If I ever get that miserable, just shoot me. There's been so much great music since then it's overwhelming.

Off the top of my head, great music from the past few years:

Fleet Foxes

Tal Wilkenfeld - Transformation

Rush - Clockwork Angels

Mr. Big - What If...

Randall Williams - Praying for Land or Einstein's Dreams (Randall is a BT'er and my occasional employer)

Suzie Vinnick - Me 'n Mabel

Chris Smither - 100 Dollar Valentine

Pretty much any soundtrack by Hans Zimmer

The list is almost without end.

Thanks for the list, I will definitely check out more of Randall WIlliams as I like different acoustic stuff.

Isn't it amazing that whenever a person makes the claim "there hasn't been any good music since ________" - it is always the case that the blank part just happens to be when that person was a late adolescent?

This is not a coincidence.

I mostly listen to bands I discovered years ago, but I enjoyed my week this summer among a lot of college kids who were in the same place I was 20 years ago, and I was discovering new music through them, and enjoying it very much.

That said, I think the existence of Insane Clown Posse and their subculture is a sign of the decline of Western civilization, so yeah, I'm getting old.

I reached adolescence in 80's so that period of music will always mean the most to me.

If there was a period when music took a dip for me, it would be the mid-90's, mainly because I wasn't a fan of rap metal or even a lot of grunge. But to each his own.

But there is a TON of great music coming out these days. In fact, there are so many great new bands and so many great songs I can't keep up with them all-- I know I'm missing some stuff I would absolutely love if only I knew about them.

Just a few of the "newer" bands that have me excited these days would include:

The Vaccines

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Generationals

Fujiya & Miyagi

Foster The People

The Drums

Washed Out

Jaill

Cut Copy

Kasabian

I am going to report this back to my co-worker and see if he changes his framed collection of old albums that adorn his office wall...  (All 70's stuff)..

I also agree there is good music today, I even like some of the Pop stuff and I'm almost 45 years old....
