Subject: 7-year-old triathlete among the victims at Sandy Hook

Chase Kowalski was always outside, playing in the backyard, riding his bicycle. Just last week, he was visiting neighbor Kevin Grimes, telling him about completing — and winning — his first mini-triathlon.

I don't know why, but details like this really make the tragedy hit home.  This 7-year-old kid had the same love of competition and S/B/R as the rest of this little community of ours.  Who knows, maybe he would have been at Kona in 2030.

Really?  The deaths of the other 19 kids don't hit home because they weren't triathletes?  Why is it that some on this forum want to make some triathlon tie to every tragic event in the news?  If the kid was doing tris at age 7 I'm guessing he won't be doing them into his teens....maybe he will....doesn't really matter....I doubt his parents give a crap that he could have been doing Kona in 2030.  Sorry op, I just think this type of post is not in good taste.

Ease up.  I think you missed the point.   We all hurt right now for every child and person that was lost.  Don't be so sour.

You're seriously criticizing the way the OP found a small connection to one of the victims which helped to identify with the boy in a real way?  Talk about poor taste!

I don't think the OP was trying to minimize the others.  Reality is...this IS a triathlon forum so yeah, a lot of discussions here center on (wait for it)....triathlon.

Yes, exactly.  I thought others might want to read about it, particularly given the number of posters who have little ones in Kids of Steel or similar events.  (as I might next year with my 6-year-old)

My heart breaks for them all......and it's human nature to look for connections, similarities.   e.g. ~ I have a daughter, I have sons. I've had 6 year olds.....that were triathletes then, and are now.  No more or less special, just a connection.  There were probably also soccer players, shortstops, runners, pitchers, karate kids, ballerinas.

Sad.

I completely understand. In one of the pictures a girl is wearing a dress my 6 year old daughter has. I could see my daughters face, it was the dress that did it for me. Hit me hard.

I understand, Hoos, but I need to say that, because of this time, all the victims have a place in my heart, to not undermine them.

Hey Birkie, lighten up. This is a tragedy of epic proportions. I have to admit, I have been thinking about it almost constantly since Friday noon and it has become much more difficult as I have found out personal information about the victims. Ages, names, pictures. It rips my heart out. If the OP finds the connection with a young triathlete, who are you to judge that.  It isn't in poor taste at all in my opinion. I think I get your criticism; but he wasn't trying to put the "triathlete" ahead of the victim or the circumstances. I think he was expressing a "connection" he has with one of the young children. I don't see anything wrong with that. We are all grieving in our own ways.

I'm not sure where people are reading he is undermining anybody. When we hear a story part of it might strike a particular cord. For instance if one of the kids had the same name or looked like your kid. This doesn't mean we don't care about the other kids. I don't care more for the girl wearing the same dress my daughter has, just made it feel that much more real.
