We're planning a trip to the Grand Canyon in the Spring (April). Any suggestions? We've got most of our activities in and around the canyon all set, but I'm looking for stuff to do in and around Phoenix and between Phoenix and the GC. Scottsdale? Sedona? Flagstaff? Other ideas? My son is nine and is fine with hiking.

My uncle has probably ran 30 marathons....and he considers a hike he took into the canyon and back out one of the coolest things he's ever done.  I think maybe? (not sure) your son is a little young for it, at least as my uncle described it, but even though you said you are set for activities around the canyon it might be something to consider since you are there anyway.

We're definitely going to hike into the canyon--not all the way to the floor, but part of the way for sure. To the floor and back on the same day would definitely be too much for the kid. It sounds amazing, though. We'll probably go all the way down on another day, but we'll let the mules do the work.

It's one of the best vacations we ever took.  It's one of those places that every time I'd see the canyon my stomach would go up to my throat.

South Rim is definitely the place to be and staying anywhere in or around Grand Canyon Village is awesome.  My boys were 11 & 13 and we hiked the South Kaibab Trail.  It's perfect for a day hike with youngins.  It goes all the way to the floor, but if you go to Cedar Ridge (~halfway) and back it takes around 2 or 3  hours.  My boys loved it and they still talk about it 6 years later.
It's a safe trail, but still has enough scary places to make it exciting.

Here's a few pic's from our adventure:
The Scary corner

The narrow trail

Cedar Ridge

Start calling the Phantom Ranch a month or so out and see if you can catch a cancellation. http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/contact-us-700.html.
We managed to get a cabin a few years ago at the last minute. It will be well worth the effort if you get lucky. My girls were 10 and 13 then and managed the trip just fine. It was cold, in the low twenties, but it was one of the best hiking experiences we've ever had. Get hiking poles for the trip down if you go!

Sedona is a must.  Flag is a great place and you'll be close enough so might as well.  It's still going to be pretty cool/cold up there so keep that in mind.  Phoenix could be worth it depending on what you would be interested in doing.

Sunset Crater is pretty interesting and an easy hike. The kid would probably like the Petrified Forest.

There is meteor crater outside of Flagstaff. Its riduculously expensive, but if you watch any science shows it makes an appearance quite a bit.

In the canyon, I've done the South Kaibab to Bright Angel, its a bit much for a kid though. Someone suggested Cedar Ridge, that's an excellent idea. That trail is less crowded than Bright Angel and you get some amazing views from there. There is no water on the South Kaibab though and you're out in the full sun so I'd suggest an early start.

If you want to head down Bright Angel, there is Plateau Point you can hike out too. It's that flat looking green area that looks like a big field you see in picture from the south rim.

ooh ooh Mount Humphreys is a fantastic hike - or so they tell me. We almost made it to the tree line when an ice storm hit. We decided it would not be a good idea to be the tallest thing in Arizona and ran back down and spent the rest of the day hiking is some lava tubes.

I have family in the area so I've spent a bit of time out there.

Went with the family in 09. GREAT family vacation. I figured it'd be a once in a lifetime so splurged to stay in the park. GREATNESS!! Saw moose walking around. Myself and the two younger ones took the mule train down to the Lookout. Everyone said you needed reservations months in advance; I rolled the dice and they had openings. Full disclosure. If you, or anyone in your party is nervous/scared of heights and/or large animals-PASS. We had a tremendous experience!!! It IS eight (8) FULL hours in the saddle!!!
Take in the IMAX in the village!
REMEMBER-the Grand Canyon is a magnet for Darwin candidates-Follow the rules!

We also went to Page, AZ and took the smooth water float from Lake Powell. Well worth it!!

We did a several day mountain bike trip in the South Rim area. The 2 AM coyote howls were eery and amazing at the same time.
If you hike into the Canyon, pack all the water you think you'll need and then pack some more. Dehydration can sneak up on you there.
Speaking of Darwin, I got a book chronicling all of the fatalities in Grand Canyon. The foolishness was amazing.
My son was about 8 when we did the trip. I told him we would come back sometime and raft down the Grand Canyon. He eventually told me he thought I meant we would ride the raft down the side of the canyon and it freaked him out. He did not realize I meant raft on the river.

I did Rim to River to Rim this past Easter. I am not a religious person but seeing the sun come up from Oh Ahh Point while music from the Sunrise mass echoed through the canyon was amazing to experience. It left lots to ponder the rest of the day. That being said if I was taking my kids I would mule ride down to the river and stay in Phantom Ranch. It is unreal down there. I had lunch there before heading back up. You should really try to fit Phantom Ranch in, but call now as they start reserving up to 1 year in advance.

Sedona is also a must. Lots of stuff here as well. Devil's Bridge is a short hike and enough off the beaten path that there are not boat loads of tourists.
