Subject: Used bike suggestions based on Retul fit numbers?
I am a newbie looking for a used tri bike. Per everyone's recommendations, I made the investment in a Retul fit this morning. I am not sure how to translate the numbers on the report to the numbers I see.

I have never been on triathlon bike until today, so flexibility is certainly an issue. The fitter also noted some issues with my hipflexors that makes getting down aero difficult.

With all that said, the important numbers were:

Frame Stack: 631mm
Frame Reach: 428mm
Arm Pad Stack: 773mm
Arm Pad Reach: 463mm

Seems like the stack is very high compared to the reach number. I believe that will decrease as the flexibility comes.

I am looking for something in the $1500 range, so I am probably looking something in the 3-4 year old range.

Any thoughts or suggestions where I can look for a matching bike?

Thank you!

Here is a database of stack and reach
http://www.slowtwitch.com/stackreach/index.php

How high did he put your saddle ?
What length cranks did he suggest ?

Thank you for the reply

The crank length was 172.5 mm (with a suggestion for 170mm if a used bike had it ) and a seat height of 834 mm.

When I got my Retul fit done my fitter had a database of frames, old and new loaded into the Retul software tool. He could even sub in/out stems etc. to see what could fit.

How tall are you ? You may be all leg which would explain some things.

If you have an iphone or ipad you can use this software
http://www.zipp.com/support/vukafit/index.php#sm.00001or6bcwlbffckp...

This will allow to figure out how to achieve a pad stack/reach from your frame bike stack/reach.
The frame stack he gave you doesn't make sense. You will have to find a bike with lower stack and use pad risers, + stem and/or spacers.

There are other things he may or may not have done to help you hip flexor problems and hopefully he did everything to get you low even with your flexibility. You have about 6cm drop. I have 15 and I am as flexible as a steel bar and older than you I'm sure.

I would start by looking at something like a 56cm P2 (on paper), building it up using the Zipp calculator and ou will get a feel of what is going to work.
The Zipp Vuka system that calculator uses can be put on many bikes for not much $.

You can then shop for bikes, compare them to the P2 and say "I would have to reduce the stem by 10mm" or "I could put the 25mm" rissrs on the pads.....

I am 6'1" tall. My inseam is 35.1" and trunk is 26.5".

Hopefully with some work on the flexibility side of things I will be able to find something that works for me.

Saddle setback was 37 mm.

The saddle was a 155 mm specialized power comp saddle.

From what I gather, the stack and drop are fluid while the reach is a little more static.

With that said, based upon the highest stack and the narrow reach, I am now looking at:

Blue Triad SP (575mm/432mm)
QR Kilo (568mm/424mm)
Felt B Series (573mm/436mm)

Any other tall and narrow entry level bikes I should be looking at?

Hopefully after some work and some time on the trainer, I will be able to adjust into a somewhat good position.

Based on the info you posted here and elsewhere it sounds like you want to take this fit data with a grain of salt.

Do you currently own a road bike ? When do you want to race ?

Maybe you should use your road bike to dial in a position first ?

I would hate to see you buy a bike that doesn't fit you based on a bad fit

I am 6' 0".  I did a Guru fit and like the Retul the software had thousands of bike frames loaded into the system.  There wasn't a single one that fit all of my dimensions though.  The bike fitter explained that for TT bike fits that was pretty common because most of the frames in the database were road bikes and that TT bike tended to to have fewer exact fits. He recommended one of the bikes in their store but I wanted to shop around for more options so he told me the minimum reach and maximum stack height to look for.  After I looked through about 300 TT frames  I only found about 6 frames that fit those two criterion. Some met it by larger margins on one category but not the other some were really close to the limit on both.  So I got back with the bike fitter and asked where to go from there.  He gave me a front center height to look at and my options dropped from 6 frames to one frame.  I didn't get that bike (because I could find one in my budget).  The bike fitter told me not to sweat it too much if I didn't get an exact fit and as long as I could add spacers to the stack height he could probably make a frames that was close work for my fit.  Soo...my recommendation is to keep in touch with your bike fitter.  The fitter can explain all the dimensions and more important can tell you what dimensions you will need to watch to get something that will work for your fit.
