Expert 724 Simi Valley | Subject: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Thought I would get the ball rolling on this. This our thread to share our thoughts, stories, triumphs, and plot the downfall of other teams. The team and our thread will be what we make it - so feel free to use it as you see fit. At the very least, lets hope everybody checks in to introduce themselves, share a bit o' backstory and a word about your goals during the challenge.
Looking over the spread sheet - our team has the least mileage so I am going to assume that most are at places in their training where encouragement will help. And as a team, I am thinking that consistency will carry us on through!
Go Nads! Incidentally - the image in the starter thread is NOT the Nads mascot...sigh. That is a wounded Carolina gamecock...the sell t-shirts with the emblem below. I won't post a picture of their actual mascot "Scrotie" who comes to the hockey games... |

Expert 724 Simi Valley | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) So...my name is Andy, I am a pastor in Malibu and I am doing my first sprint tri on 9/14. I have been training for a little more than 6 months and have lost about 60 pounds in the process. I am new to endurance sports for the most part, with the exception of doing a half-marathon in 05 for Team in Training. I am trying to get back in shape after slacking following the birth of my son. My goal for September is 35 miles which is right in line with my increasing capacity, but will be a challenge given that there will be some tapering right before my event. |

Master 2665 The Whites, New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Everyone together, "Hi, Andy!" My name is Slugger (well, no it isn't, but it is my nickname from college fencing, and I LOFF it). I used to absolutely detest running, then I tried a couch to 10K program to help me in losing 50 pounds (yay!), and somehow went through a warp field and discovered I actually like it! So now I'm actually completely focused on running races instead of tris for the rest of the season, until I can afford a road bike and get my mountain bike on the trails and off the road. I live, as my avatar says, in the White Mountains of NH. Actually, rather close to the Whites, on the border of VT and NH. It is gorgeous here, and I am loving finding all new running routes. I'm on the side of a mountain, so the new routes are TOUGH, which is awesome. Unfortunately, in my enthusiasm I pushed too hard and strained/sprained/ouch-i-fied both of my peroneus longus tendons. Those are the ones that run down the outside of your lower leg and under your ankle, attaching a midfoot right behind your fifth metatarsal. Right now, walking is painful, I can't stand still long enough to do dishes, and I'm gettin' a bit too friendly with ibuprofen. So, August has become a month of recovery, and September has become a month of going way, way, way back in training to rebuild slooooowly this time, to avoid this and get/keep myself healthy. Thus, the low mileage for me. Looking forward to having a lot of fun with this, my first competitive challenge! gooooOOOOOO NADS! |

Expert 2189 Dodge County, MN (out in the corn) | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Hi team! Stopping by to introduce myself... My name is Pattie and this is my 3rd season doing tris. Before tris, I showed horses for many years. Yes, that's me in my avatar pic. My show horse retired in '05 with a degenerative foot condition and now he lives the life of a king. I found tris as a result of a running injury. Isn't that how a lot of us get started? In Aug '06, we left MD and moved to our dream farm out here in MN. The three horses are comfortably retired and my husband and I are having fun doing tris. He swore that there was no way he could run, but now he's putting in consistent runs and placing well. For that, I hate him (kidding). My run training has been spotty to say the least. I've been battling injuries the whole time. Stress fracture in L leg and now IT band issues on the right. My sports med doc told me to concentrate on getting faster on the bike. Running for me is about damage control. I have a du at the end of Sept that I'm training for. It is a hilly bike course with two 5k runs. I'm hoping to survive the run and hold my own on the bike. Guess that's about all. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Go Nads! |

Master 1655 NJ | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Hi fellow nads - Im Kristin and will be running 50 miles in Sept. Umm, I did a HIM in July and my training has taken quite a nose dive since then. This month I did the casual challenge and managed to squeak out 45 miles. I have a bunch of tentative sprints lined up for Sept. but they're tentative b/c if it's a good beach weekend then the beach will win out! Don't worry - I love running on the boardwalk. Nice and flat! Let's win this thing!! |

Master 1457 MidWest | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Hello everyone! I'm Beth and I'm a wannabe triathlete!!!! I am a full time student (graduate in December), mother to 4 teenagers and wife of an IM-in-training. My goals for this month are going to be pretty low but that is only because I can't guarantee what my teaching schedule will be like. I am a student teacher for junior English at the local high school. My youngest 2 are sophomores in high school and are on the soccer and cross country teams and are active in scouts. Oldest doesn't live at home anymore but is around. 18 y/o lives at home is attending the local CC. He is a music education major and is in the local jazz band and concert band so his schedule will be busy as well.

Expert 713 WV | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Hello Andy, Slugger, Pattie, Kristin, and Beth!!! I am Suzie. I am an educator at the college level. I teach sport performance biomechanics, rehabiliation of athletic injuries, among other things. I did my dissertation research on the hammer throw. Hence, the screen name. I also work with our students as a clinician to make sure they are tying in all they learn in the classroom with their roatations in the clinic. I have been active all my life. I have been involved with endurance activities since I was a XC and distance athlete in college. I am using this to help get me back into shape and in a more consistent training pattern. I diagnosed with thyroid cancer on Mar 17, 2008. I am 2 months post RAI treatment. Life is moving forward. Andy...How does a paster discuss being on the NADs? Slugger...jealous of where you live and the coolness of knowing somebody that actually fenced. Pattie....Horses...cool...I have been approached by Vet Med to help with rehabilitating horses research. Where do you live in MN? Kristin....congrats on the HIM. I am envious. Beth....congratulations on your impending graduation and being able to juggle family with that. Good luck with your student teaching.

Master 2665 The Whites, New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Pattie, I've actually been secretly stalking you because of your avatar. I'm an eventer, too, though I'm now taking a hiatus from the ponies. I married into an OTTB, grandson of Secretariat (and spittin' image of his granddaddy, except for the speed), and am half-owner of an Arab who has the potential to go Advanced if only we can find someone who fits her little 14.2 self. Suzie - you surprised me for a second, as I had a prof in college named Sue Hammer! Calc, though, not sports med. My feet are healing ever so slowly, or else the meds are just making them feel better. Fingers crossed for the (now walking) 5K on August 30, tagging a 4800' peak on the 30-31st, then easing ever so slowly back into running for Sept.! |

Expert 724 Simi Valley | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Morning Nads - one week to go till we drop the Hammer (no, not YOU). I am willing to Captain this motley crew if no one else is particularly passionate about following up with peeps and tracking miles for Shawn. Jump in if you would like to nominate yourself - I know from Shawn that he wants these in place midweek or so so that he can stop worrying about that part.

Expert 2189 Dodge County, MN (out in the corn) | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) I nominate Revbigdog for team captain. <raises hand> Andy- So cool that you're an (ex)eventer too! Every once in a while we talk about getting Horse #4 but we haven't looked yet. I think I'd stick to QH crosses since I'm getting too old for the crazies. I just have to figure out how to balance tri training with event training. If I didn't have that pesky thing called a job, I think I could do it. |

Amen on that one! LOL! I know of a faboo QH/draft cross (PMU baby) that would make an excellent low level eventer (probably top out at Training), and will be a perfect schoolie. At four, hasn't been backed yet, so nothing stupid done to him, he's very solid in head and body. He has/had all his ground manners, but would need some polishing. You know you're interested.... I second the nomination for revbigdog. Lead on, fearless leader! |

Master 1655 NJ | Subject: RE: Nads Team Thread (Sept Run Challenge) Hey everyone - Hope you're gonna enjoy the weekend and have a little mini taper before all the serious running begins!! Gonna go run and swim a little now and relax for the rest of the day with my little girlies - playgrounds, parks, pool, Dunkin Donuts. . . . all the good things that make up a weekend. The whole "GO NADS" cheer never gets old for me - am I really just a 12 year old boy at heart?? |

I actually just got cleared by the doctor yesterday to get back to some training (still no swimming ) after having been sidelined nearly a month. Sine I've been off for a while, I'm taking it easy. I'm shooting for 6 miles a week which will give me a total of 24 miles for the challenge. |
