I'm trying to make a ring tone from a song that the author will not allow a ring tone to be made from it. Any suggestions how to get around this?  Not having much luck.

So it is OK to break copyright laws and the authors intent?

You can use your CD to rip an mp3 - or download an mp3 - and make the ringtone yourself using a freeware product called Audacity.  download it at www.audacity.com.

That's what that mobile17 site does as well, without downloading software.

To answer Wolf, I bought the CD and/or the MP3, in my mind I'm free to do with it what I feel (within non-commercial reason, of course).

Yep - I agree with that, sorry about my OP.

I am in the software industry and it is amazing how many legitimate companies steal by violating copyright laws.

We have bought every Cd Pearl Jam has out including boots.  We have been to 13 concerts and have purchased shirts, hoodies, etc.   I have bought the song I want to make a ring tone off itunes for .99 cents instead of copying it off a cd I ALREADY have.  I'm not going to worry about a little copy right issue.  I  think Ed and the gang will understand.  But thanks for being worried about their well being.

Copyrights and music are a big mess.  You can't control the cloud.  There were some "experts" on the radio talking about it earlier this week, and they basically said that the music industry, by not getting out ahead of the digital age, has pretty much ensured that most of the music files out there are "stolen" or somehow otherwise "not perfectly legal."

I just can't figure out how to get the downloaded ringtone to work on my phone, since it tells me I need to navigate to the web using my phone's browser.  Uh... my phone doesn't go to the web.  I know.  It's nearly 3 years old.  Ancient.

One of the main things you need to keep in mind with the copyright issue is that you aren't making money off of the musical item yourself. If you are paying a service to make the ringtone for you, then they are the ones with the copyright infringement, not you.
