Subject: Hello from London
last year I completed my first two marathons in respectable (but not fast) times (both sub 4 hrs). Despite being fit when younger I'd not done physical exercise for years before last year - so I was quite pleased to get from nowhere to marathon in the space of 4/5 months.

I now want to move into triathlon. I've added swimming (twice a week: one mile each session) and weights (once a week) to my weekly training which was only running (aprox 30 miles a week).

Looking at bikes now - seem to be directed towad the Giant OCR 3.

Any advice for someone starting out who knows NOTHING would be appreciated (I dont even know where to find races!)
Ben

Hi Benjamin,\

Welcome to the site. That is remarkable that you did two marathons last year after only working out for only 4/5 months.It seems like you are a pretty good swimmer too. You probably will pick up on the cycling no problems. Just make sure you get properly fitted for your bikes. There are a couple links on the website to help you find a tri but I don't know if they cover the UK. There are a couple of other Brit's on this site that could tell you better. This site has a wealth of information available with many people who are willing to give advice.

Welcome Aboard;
I'm an ex-pat Englishman over in the USA. You will find this site a great place. Plenty of advice and inspiration.
I think the best place for you to check out race details in England would be british triathlon at http://www.britishtriathlon.orgThat would at least point you in the right direction

Benja, you sound like you are in excellent shape. You swimming and running legs are certainly up there. With regards to the bike though; what are you buying the bike for? Triathlons only? If triathlons only, the TCR Aero 2 would be a better choice. Or will you be riding on the road a lot? I have a feeling that with the events you are performing now you will move up in the trithlon field and want to upgrade to a more aero bike in the very near future. That being the case, the OCR-3 is okay but be forewarned that Sora components are not upgradeable. If you are looking to keep this bike for a long time and have a mind to upgrade later on, try the OCR-2 with mostly Tiagra components.

G'day ben,
good work with the marathons... you should go a long way in triathlons with ability like that. i would agree about getting a bike a few steps up from the ocr 3 if you are serious about triathlon... atleast if you do get in to it you will have a quality bike which you can uprgade if necassary. i would suggest getting something with ultegra if you want to train on it regularly, as Sora will literally fall apart on you if you use it that often, no matter how well you look after it (i know from expereince there).
spend a bit more upfront and you will save in the long run

best of luck,
aidan
