Subject: Poor College kid looking for an inexpensive bike

I hope someone on here may be able to help a young girl out. Someone told her to call me about buying bicycle for transportation. She need something like a hybrid, mtn bike, or comfort bike. I call them city bikes. I am guessing that she is about 5' 5" although I did not ask her. She says that she could probably come up with $150. I would love to find a free bike for her. I have an older Panasonic 5000 road bike that was pretty cool in it's day that I would be willing to give her except she is not tall enough and it does not have enough gears. She really needs something with a triple chainring. I would be willing to trade my Panasonic to anyone that has something that would better fit her needs.

My old Trek 930 mtb is just sitting in my garage. She might want to spend some of that money on a tune up/new tires but it'll work for her. It is a 16" bike. I bought it small as for some reason back in mid 90's I thought that would be better for singletrack riding.

You were nice enough to lend me your canoe for 18 months so least I can do is donate this for the cause.

I don't know what college she goes to but the UGA pawn shops are loaded down with bikes. It's pretty amazing what you'll find and a lot of them need nothing more than a new chain from the previous owner having no clue what oil is.

I remember a buddy of mine down in Statesboro had a super nice Trek that he sold for $150 when I bet it was worth used close to $400-500 and probably new around $600-800. It looked new too. He just needed some extra cash for his springbreak trip to Key West (priorities). I would have grabbed it but found out too late.

I used to work for the Athens Bicycle Recycle Program for Bike Athens for a very short time. But they sell bikes I believe for $45-50 totally refurbished, comes with helmet and bike lock. She can try that option.

Thanks, that sounds really good. BTW, I meant to send you a message yesterday since you work near Smyrna. Felix and I met up at the SCT before work this morning for a 20 mile ride. We met at 6:10. Actually I was a bit late. Rode 115.46. Then I went to LA Fitness for a shower and was at work by 8:20. I will let you know the next time we ride if you are interested or just send me a note if you want to do it some time.
