Subject: Swimming Milestone
I swam off and on last summer (kidding myself by calling it regular training), took some time off during the start of the school year, and then picked it back up (off and on) in December. I started to seriously train again (2-3 times a week) in early May.

It seemed like I was always gasping for air after 50m. I could 50m free, 50m back, and 50m free with no problem, but doing a straight 100m+ freestyle seemed to be unreachable. (Which is odd, since I did a tri last year that was 650m, and I swam the practice tri freestyle straight through.)  Maybe it's just something about being in the pool.

So today I was at the end of my workout doing my cooldown, and I thought I'd to 50m free, 50m back, 50m free and 50m back. I finished my flip turn after my first 50m and just kept doing freestyle. I was breathing every 2 strokes after flip turns and switching to every 3-4 strokes halfway through the 25m.

Before I knew it, I had done 200m! Straight!

And I didn't die!

It's a small thing to celebrate, but I'll celebrate it anyway. Just thought I'd share.

Way to go Joel!  The first 200 are always the hardest for me.  Once I get passed that it seems like my body adjusts and I'm able to keep going.  Keep up the good work!

Very nice!

I heard flip turns are faster but they tend to run up an oxygen debt if you aren't careful, is there any particular reason you do flips?

Way to go! I started swimming about the same time as you and  I just hit 200m last week. I am now up to 400m. So just keep swimming.

I started doing flip turns late last summer.  It's just always been something I've wanted to learn how to do.

If I'm doing freestyle, I probably flip turn about 60% of my drills.  The other 40%, I swim to the wall, touch and turn.  It just depends on what I'm in the mood for, I guess.

Congrats!!!!! I am just a little ahead of you and point to a semi-recent blog entry where I celebrated the same thing.  Longer distances are in your near future.  BTW, congrats on the flip turns, haven't tried to learn that yet.

Congratulations. I now the feeling as I just completed my first 200 last week after struggling for some time with short repeats (25 or 50). Having overcome that frustration, though, I feel reinvigorated to swim, and am actually looking forward to my next one.

So, way to go, and as I told myself when I broke through the two hundred, now you can really work on your form and start shaving time off your repeats.
