I was out last night and a bird flew right in front of me, I hit it right dead centre on my tire and it bounced off to the side.   By the thump and the flying feathers, I am certain it didn't make it.  I was heading down a hill at 42KM/hr so I didn't turn around to look in fear of swerving into the soft shoulder and becoming roadkill myself.

I was a little startled, but it really didn't affect my pace.  As I continued on I got to thinking, what would have happened if the timing was off by a fraction of a second and it flew into my spokes? Other then a gooey mess, would I have been in more danger of spilling?  Had I not been riding a mountain bike with big nobby tires and been on a tri bike with skinny wheels (which I many times have dreamed I am) would the impact have been significantly more dangerous?

Tell me about your roadkill experiences and 'hopefully' how I shouldn't be concerned for my safety outside of the other hazards we have to put up with.

Do bugs count as roadkill?    That's about the only thing I have killed that I know of.  The closest I have come to actual roadkill is a squirrel running across a path in front of me and at the last second turning around and crossing in front of me again - I may have gotten a bit of his tail fur.  Scared the crap out of me!

It had rained here extensively.  I was riding my bike and saw all these splotches of mud on the road.  As I was riding I realized they were all little frogs.  I must have run over several hundred.  I can still remember the sound of squishing bodies.  There must have been millions.

Ouch, that guy was full on the brakes too and the front wheel still just crumpled.

The only think I can remember was the wasp that stung me in the face one, I just hope it didn't survive after that.

I had a deer that was seriously thinking of crossing the road.... there really wasn't a chance for me to react/yell as it happened so fast, but it saw me and quickly turned 180 back into the woods...phew

In a biathlon I was doing in central park a squirrel had been hit by a bike.  I didn't see it, but the squirrel was lying in the middle of the road as I rode by.  Someone was nice enough to put a traffic cone by him/her so s/he didn't get hit again.  The squirrel was alive, but since it was still immobile with all this bike traffic whizzing by (and had stayed there as someone put a traffic cone inches from it) I'm not 100% optimistic about the eventual outcome.  Was kind of a buzz kill...

I was out for a ride 2 days ago and was going down a steep hill, when I looked down to check the speedo. When I looked up, "THWACK" I hit a rather significant and juicy bug.

Speedo had me at 59k (not sure of the accuracy) but it was fast enough that the explosion left guts and juice on my face and in my mouth...tasty! Clean up on aisle 6!!

I didn't wobble or anything like that, but I couldn't help but laugh as I turned around for the painful climb back up!

A few weeks back, we were riding in a group of 10 - 12 riders when a squirrel darted out in the road and did the "dance of death" .  The first rider hit him fairly square...squirrel did a 360 and darted right back into the group for some more.  Second rider cliped him and he did another 360 and went for another try to get to the other side of the road.  Squirrel decided he would try to go thru the spokes of the third rider, but to no avail.  After a full 720 he scampered off the road I am sure wondering...WTF!

Back in college it rolled over a squirrel with the front tire while I was up no handed.  Lil bugger did a 180 and a rolled him with the back tire as I was coming back down on the bars.  He survived and quickly scampered off grunting something fierce at me.
