Ok, as per a thead from last week, I started paying more attention to how well my cages (straps) hold my shoes on the pedals.  I notice that I really don't get any lift until about the time my pedal is halfway up. I see it was unanimous around here that you guys and gals believe shoes and clipless pedals make a big difference so I'm trusting you.  I changed my training schedule so that I get to test them out on a 33 mile ride tomorrow morning.

Picked up a pair of Shimano shoes and Look Keo Easy pedals today.  I bought from a sponsor of the OLY I'm doing. It goes to benefit Cystic Fibrosis so along with having a place to try them on, I wanted to spend my money with them.

Picked up the same shoes last weekend. I was already running clipless but it was older mtb stuff I had shimano pedals and diadora shoes. Grabbed some speedplays when I was up in NJ for a business trip near the bike shop I used to work at.

Stiffer shoes are much nicer for road rides vs the mtb shoes.

It seems that I made a pretty decent choice.  Not that there was much of a choice to be made.  The only other shoes they had in my size were $300+.  Also, the LG's also match my new bike.  I'd post pics of that, but it's an entry level roadie, and that's not really bike porn.  It's more like amateur night at the strip club...sure you'll look, but you won't be impressed.  Or so I would imagine....

Cool!  I like those too.  They didn't have a huge selection at the small shop I was buying from so I took the Shimano.  They were very comfy and the folks fit the cleats for me.

I also picked up up an aero waterbottle so my cheap $250 Schwinn is all pimped out like a Honda with extra stickers.

FYI for other newbies like me who get a new pair of clipless shoes:

1.  Adjust your bike seat for the new height.  I didn't until I got to the top of my first hill and realized my thighs were burning.

2.  Clipping in and out isn't very hard but one thing to note: when you do put your foot down, realize that you will have NO traction.  I almost hit the ground and it was not due to problems unclipping.

3.  When you lose your water bottle on a hill and it starts rolling down the hill.  If you get off the bike and go after it, you will look as coordinated as a drunk cowboy (in boots) chasing his hat across a frozen lake.

Other than that, I had to stop 3 times (seat height adjustment, chain came off once, and lost my water bottle once).  I still hit a personal best on a very hilly 33.5 mile ride today.

LOL'ed again!

Just picked up new shoes for me and the Mrs. today.. Store knocked $30 off of mine and $45 off of hers, so i'm pretty happy with the prices (as cheap as I could find them online if not cheaper).. the TR-51 is COMFY... I love the fact that we're both into the sport, I just hate doubling the price... at least (according to her) when I pick up the ROO that I want in a year or two she won't need one too!...

For me:

Picked up these recently.  Now I just need to decide on some pedals (still have the SPDs on my bike).

I never considered cycling shoes to be "cool" but my kids think they are.  haha  I should fix the thread title to "bike shoe porn."

One thing I am thinking about is adding a non-skid pad to the heal of my shoes. This is common for cowboy boots since they can be rather slippery. They make adhesive rubber pads you put on the bottoms to give them traction. Since that would not affect the usage at all, it couldn't hurt to add a bit of safety to the bike shoes in case I have to run down a hill after a water bottle again.
