Haven't been there yet myself, but I found this on "that other triathlon website":

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/Harry_Wright_Lake_Whiting_N.J._P2398727/

This would be a little farther for you compared to Wenonah Lake.

I'm surprised the Wenonah Lake swims would be over...the website says "starting in May and continuing through the summer".  Isn't it still summer?

This was in the Central NJ OWS thread but through 9/3 they have been holding OWS at Peddie Lake in Hightstown NJ. IT's organized through Jersey Multisport (http://www.jerseyareamultisport.com/).

Hi smorse, I too am in Mt. Laurel. Coming from running, I started biking because I want to do some sprints next year. Out of curiosity my fiance and I went to Atsion lake so I could try OWS, it's probably been 15 years since I've been in open water. It definitely was a rude awakening but to the point. I went to Atsion on a Saturday and it was packed but I was still able to go out the the ropes and get some room to try it. I would guess first thing in the morning when they open it would not be bad and I think if you tell them why you are there swimming they would probably let you on the other side of the ropes. Realistically you can still touch bottom outside the ropes.
I may just buy the season pass next year for like $50 so I can OWS whenever I want.

Hi.

Can you tell me about Atsion lake?  I have an Olympic tri there in a few weeks.  Is the water very dirty?

Thanks!

It is pine water (thought it was cedar water) so it is brown, I didn't have googles on but doubt visibility is real good. But it is not like polluted dirty and I didn't see geese there. The bottom in the area you are allow to swim and can touch was a sandy bottom, not slimey, etc. Even though doesn't have good visibility I would rather swim there then somewhere like Kings Grant which I hear is pretty nasty, and I plan to do the sprint there next year.

Great. Thank you.  And by the way, Kings Grant has the nastiest water I've ever swam in.  I'm not squeamish about in dirty water, but bottom was slimy and I came out covered in brown/black slime.

Hah - so true about King's Grant - I would only do it again if it were wetsuit legal.

Lake Atsion is a great substitute for Lake Wenonah. Lake Wenonah is so much further and Atsion works out better because it is easier to get to off 206.

Also some really, REALLY great roads back there for riding - not to mention RT 206 has about a 5 or 6 foot shoulder on both sides to ride on from about Fort Dix all the way down to Hammonton.

Kings Grant is wetsuit legal. About 90% wore them.

Thanks for the info
