So I was out on a 40 mile ride today (The Shoo Fly Classic, in case anyone is interested).  Around 30 miles out, as I am heading up a slope (too small to really be a hill), I shifted into my small chain ring and see the chain drop off.  Now at this point, I am not going too slow, and I have plenty of time to unclip, stop, and fix the problem.  But even though I have never actually done this, I had read somewhere that you can shift back to the big ring, keep pedaling, and the chain will shift back on.  So I try it.  And watch as the chain just sits there.  Then I get the realization that "Hey dummy, now you ARE going too slowly!".  And tip over.  Still clipped in. Giving the guy coming up behind me a good chuckle.

Although I DID manage to unclip just before I hit the asphalt.

If it makes you feel any better, here's my most embarassing clipless pedal moment...I was out for an easy ride a month or so back and was rolling up to a stop sign.  I unclipped my right foot to stop at the sign and for some reason leaned to the left and ...timber!  It all happened in slow motion.  I get up and notice there's another cyclist across the street watching me.  Sweet!  I got across the street and he was kind enough to invite me on their group rides.  Strangely, I've never seen him again at that same location.

LOL!  And THATS why I switched back to cage/plats.  Hope you didn't bruise up your bike body too much?

I dropped a chain during my HIM last week....wtf I never drop a chain. But I was boring and just stopped to fix it. Wonder if your strategy would work with practice?? Like...on the soft grass......

My roadie and I have learned how to handle that maneuver well.  She drops chain a lot.  You have to catch the drop early or you will wind up as the OP did.  Actually, Mine doesn't like shifting from the little to the big ring.  She needs to meet the guys at Performance again...just getting through the last 2 weeks before the final tri of the season to part with her a bit.

I think I will just stop the bike and manually adjust if it happens again!  (Usually my bike doesn't drop the chain, so I suspect I need to adjust the limiting screw a little.)

My bike does that nonsense.  I have adjusted it so that it does not happen frequently now but every time I shift up from the small gear to the larger gear, I alway look down at it and make sure I don't throw the chain up over top.  I think there should be a thin metal disc there to prevent that from being possible because even though you can adjust them, derailers get bumped, kicked, etc from time to time and it's an annoying problem to have while on the middle of a ride.

The day after my boyfriend got his first clipless system on Saturday we went for his first and my second "clipped in" ride.  When we to turned around , I took the turn way too wide, being new to my road bike, and ended up hitting the grass outside the shoulder of the road.  Of course I went down.

The truly funny part was that my boyfriend rushed over to make sure I was okay, forgot that he was clipped in, and ended up falling over right next to me.

We had a good laugh over that one.

LOL! Believe me, you are not alone. I was on vacation the other week in North Carolina and when I got back from a ride my son came running outside to welcome me (or find out when we're going swimming). I rode onto the "grass" only to find out that it was sand and my front wheel sank. I tried to unclip but just didn't have time and I just rolled on my back with the bike still clipped on. My 10 yr old son's face went from terror to laughter in about 3 seconds.

Although a helpless feeling, I've 'tipped' over twice and most everyone has (just won't admit it).  The scratch on the forks a nice reminder to me to unclip while still rolling, regardless of if I actually plan on coming to a complete stop.
I haven't tried the dropping the chain routine, knowing my luck, I'd jam the chain between the crank and bottom bracket.

Quick tip, throw one of those KFC moist towelette's in your emergency kit (great to remove grease without using the black shorts)
