Overall Rank = 440/440

Age Group Rank = 12/12
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and had upset stomach...ate a muffin and drove about an hour to the race. Checked my name to locate number and I was not listed. They had me registered for the 1/2 Ironman...that was pretty funny. Registered, body marked and set up transtion. Stayed positive about swim. Got into the 59-60 degree water about 20 minutes before my wave start.
Event warmup:

With the long distance didn't do any running or biking. Went in the water to fill wetsuit and have it warm up...plus got face used to cool water. Felt fine in water...hands were a little cool. Wanted to do a brief run on beach but way to congested.
Swim
  • 43m 8s
  • 1045 yards
  • 04m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim had me so worried that I thought of not starting a week ago. Through my swim coach and a Tri team friend, I was able to get two more OWS in and feel more comfortable in the water. I knew I would be slow but felt safe and not panicky. I was proud that I kept calm....but I could have done more freestyle and gone a little faster. Nothing like coming in last to a cheering crowd. I even was able to wave at my husband and kids at the last bouy and could see them wave back. I was escorted by Alicia on the Kayak the whole time...for the last .2 of mile a pontoon came by but let off stinky fumes that didn't help me at all.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing open water swimming and try to put together more freestyle and less side stroke/back stroke and just getting through. Really I did the best I could do and kept positive and beat the swim demon. It was a good swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 17s
Comments:

I felt so great hitting the sand and running into T1...even though my bike was the only one there. I was interviewed by someone and I did a lot of talking and messed up unzipping my ankle zippers and had to partially put back on my wetsuit to get it off. I put on bike shoes and decided to use the Porta Potty. Carried bike gloves and put them on during the first mile.
What would you do differently?:

Usually I do great in transitons...but I need to practice with my new wetsuit and the zippers. I think being excited by finishing the swim and being interviewed and being emotional about it all effected me, but I was having fun and that was the point.
Bike
  • 1h 57m 3s
  • 27.25 miles
  • 13.97 mile/hr
Comments:

The road was rough in spots but great in others. The hills on mile 4-7 were tough. I had two walk up two and my legs were horrible. I really thought a lot about quitting. A nice Grafton police Officer told me that at the top of the hill were we turned right that it was much easier from there. That encouraged me enough to keep on and he was right. It was much easier until about mile 21. At the end I had to walk up two easy hills...my legs were tired and my HR was high..and I needed to keep something for the run. On the last big hill down around mile 23 or so I didn't want to use my brakes and the road was curvy...at the end of the downhill you had to make a 90 degree turn onto another road...caught me off guard a bit and I went almost off the other side of the road...I was probably 4 feet from the far side. I hit 39.6 mph during my ride and I think it was at that location. I was able to use my aerobars a majority of the time...not on uphills. Using aerobars helps my carpal tunnel and my shoulder...not sure if it helps me go faster or not.
What would you do differently?:

Train on hills and learn to stand up to climb hills. Continue to ride more and get faster. I think I have the most room for improvement in the bike...in that I can see myself getting better.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Did well in T2...my husband said he had no time to take pictures. They were giving out race awards as I arrived....I heard the announcer say...make way for an athelete just entering trasition with her bike. I made it well until I got to my bike spot...and my neighbor was there and had taken much of my space...and she was in the way...and her race was over!! I put on my hat, number and wisely choose to run with my hydration belt. I had spilled/splashed a lot of gatorade on me from the bike and road bumps from my aerobar water bottle. I stupidly choose to splash water on my to get it off and got water in my shoes and on my socks.
What would you do differently?:

Not get my socks wet in an effort to clean up or cool off.
Run
  • 1h 34m
  • 6.2 miles
  • 15m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

One of the highlights for me on the run, was after transition my legs felt good. The bricks I have been practicing are paying off. It was hot and I was tired. I started to run/walk. Started running 8 minutes walking two...that ratio changed and by the end I was mostly walking as was all the end people. High Fived the last couple of people at the turn around who were in front of me. On the way out, I was about 3 hours from the start and lots of people were coming in...I said something or gave most everyone that thumbs up. Did I say it was hot? I had my private escort back, but they played leap frog with me...and they were an ambulance...found some humor in that...thanked them for the hard work they did through their a/c window.
What would you do differently?:

I did the best I could on this day. I ended up with blisters on the bottoms of both my feet, due to the stupid water dumping at T2. The blisters started acting the last 2-2.5 miles. Run more, build aerobic base in the off season, and keep socks dry!
Post race
Warm down:

I hugged kids and husband Kevin. I went into the water to cool down and help my legs recover and feel better and then I had lunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being 43, a bit overweight, and need to start training sooner for this event. My coach helped me a lot, but I should have started with him 2 months sooner. I can only imagine if I had tried this training on my own... what a disaster it would have been.

Event comments:

The race was well organized and in a great location. The hills make the bike and run difficult...but we do this for a challenge and we sure had one today. I'm already thinking about how much I can improve and how much faster I can finish next year. It was somewhat weird to be in last the whole time. I started last in the swim and ended up there. I didn't see anyone at all on the bike. I felt part of a race on the run, since it was an out and back.

A big congratulations on what looked to be a tough day, weatherwise. I'm so glad your swim went well; that had to be a huge confidence booster. I think it would be fun to get interviewed, but why at T1? That had to be distracting.

So I hope you've put your feet up and have had a really good dinner. You deserve it. Way to go!

Excellent job Kathy! Those hills on that course are NO JOKE! You fought your way through that race and made it through - are we going to be able to read about you in an article that you got interviewed for? You were a far better sport than I'd have been.....and then friggin getting to your rack and your neighbor hogging up all the space really sucks. Been there, done that!

Did you talk to Alicia the kayaker during the swim? That's hilarious that you waved to your family from a buoy - and great that they recognized  you!

It's great that you had such a wonderful time and had a great sense of accomplishment! This is what it's all about! There's more hills to train for and attack at Timberman! You in?

CONGRATULATIONS Kathy! What an awesome effort, and I know exactly what you mean about that course! Cold swim, hilly bike, hot run! But you know what? You did it and nothing will ever take that away! Now, let me know when you start doing OW swims with any of the Mass BTers, I definitely need the work!

Again, congrats, you deserve it triathlete!

Way to go Kathy!  That was a very tough course, especially those hills early on in the bike course (and what was up with that lady in the devil costume?). You should be very proud of finishing this one. Congratulations.

Thanks everyone for the kind words...it is great to share this with others who understand.

I added some pictures under albums...anyone who hasn't been there can see what a beautiful area it is for a Tri.

Great race Kathy. I wish I could have made it up there early enough to watch you. Finishing last? No, you got that wrong...you finished first, ahead of all those people who could be out there doing a 1/4 IM but stayed home and watched television. You finished first in the eyes of a lot of your competitors too. Trust me, because when I see "back of the pack" people coming in, I have a great feeling of respect for what they are doing and how much they are working to bring this sport into their lives. And you finished first in the eyes of your husband and children. I mean, how cool is that? Those kids are going back to school and for weeks will be bragging to their friends "My mom did a triathlon!" and that puts you at the top of the "Cool Mom" list!

Now just pick one thing that you want to get better at, and work on that. Do a shorter race, like a Sprint, for your next one...it will seem easy by comparison and will give you a big confidence boost!

Ya did great!

Awesome job Kathy!!! Looks like you've gained lots of ground against your swimming demons. I was so excited to read that you kept calm and swam the best you could have - that's what it's all about. Keep working on your OW swims and you'll continue to get more comfortable with that. I am so proud of you!
