Subject: How good is your balance

Every day when I'm out and about, I always pay attention to bike riders.  At Stoplights, some stay cleated/strapped to their pedals and just balance in one spot.  Maybe a slight move of bike. Unitl light turns green and off they go.

I have to uncleat one foot, and  most of the time it's my left foot..  To scared to loose it and fall over if I tried.

What do you do?

I can do either. It all depends upon how long I am going to have to wait for the light to turn green again.

I'm a foot-down person. I'm only riding with toe cages at the moment, but I'm sure I'll be that way with cleats as well.

Funny, I notice that most riders put their right foot down. When I even try to do that I fall over. I think it would be easier if I could, just so I could rest my foot on the curb rather than have to get out of the saddle or lean to touch the ground.

Oh well.

oh, the track stand. Funny story: I tried to do a trackstand while waiting for a light on campus, failing miserably while my mountain bike team mates laughed at me from the other side. I guess in the city you're always being watched.

The key to standing up is to find the uphill part of the road (you know the road slopes so rain can wash away), direct your tyre in that diraction, and balance between the force of gravity, and the force of your pedal.

I've found my balance has improved a lot with yoga and stability ball classes. I can't do a stationary track stand, but as long as I can even just creep forward, I don't have to unclip.

I have "learn to track stand" on my "to do list". Also on that list is "lose 20 lbs", "run faster", "win a race"....

I track stand w/ a slight roll if I get too rocky.....Only fallen once and that was because a friend called my name and I turned to look and lost my balance. They always bring it up how I looked going over in slow motion....Oh they will get theirs...

I've notice a significant improvement in this since I started riding last year.  I can pretty much come to a complete stop for a fraction of a second and not get all wobbly and freaked out.  When I first started, I had my (left) foot unclamped about 1/2 mile before the stop!  Guess it just takes time.
