Overall Rank = 577/812

Age Group Rank = 40/67
Pre-race routine:

Pumped tires, got bodymarked, set up transition area (felt rushed, but it looked organized). Drank some coffee on the way in to get my juices flowing. (And water, too!) Hit the bathroom then headed to water to warm up. Saw club members, chatted. Saw BT'er Kathy G - she was so sweet to remember my race number and come over to my spot and say hi! Saw her again before the swim.
Event warmup:

Wetsuit on, I stretched, then headed to the water. Brr! Felt cold to me, although I knew it wasn't bad. The overcast skies looked ominous. The lake is so shallow, I had to swim out far just to keep my hands from scraping the bottom. Did a few hundred yards (easy) then walked up on the beach to find club members and get ready. Should have kept moving - the cold water in my suit + waiting for my wave = stiffness in muscles.
Swim
  • 09m 44s
  • 581 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really should have done better here, for starting up front. I know I'm capable of a better swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster. Start closer to the "inside," so I don't drift as far out, away from the first buoy; I put in a little extra mileage here correcting my direction. Kick the girls back (who says I have to play nice?). Practice speedy starts during training, then back down to race pace.
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Had trouble locking my cleat into my shoes! Spent 10 unnecessary seconds here! Need to roll socks on faster.
What would you do differently?:

Possibly forego socks, although I would sacrifice comfort. Get on the bike, then worry about cleats. Ultimately, I should have shoes attached to bike, run out to course, start pedalling and then put feet in shoes!
Bike
  • 1h 01m 29s
  • 15 miles
  • 14.64 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to figure out how to more smoothly transition from middle to big ring; it just doesn't go smoothly and the grinding noise frightens fellow riders! Today, I focused on smooth climbing, pulling with my hamstrings (pull up!), and steadying my uppper body, really putting all of my energy in pedalling my little butt off. I felt slow, like I hadn't practiced enough, and I HATE getting passed. It was about mile 7 that I vowed to put more miles in with Jesse. I didn't feel speedy here at all!

I did do well on the downhills (pedalled all the way), and I never once used the granny gear. I only climbed out of the saddle once, but with such long inclines, the course didn't really allow for that. I need to work on speed BIG TIME. Endurance is good, but I really need to focus on speed.

A highlight was seeing the Hoyts racing - man Mr. Hoyt has amazingly strong thighs! He was cruising!!
What would you do differently?:

GO FASTER. Practice speedy climbs. Consider a lighter bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

I forgot to remove my feet approaching transition. When I realized this it was too late, and there was a sharp turn left and only a short distance until you had to dismount. I decided to run in cleats and chance it. T2 went very smoothly. Racked and swapped shoes, grabbed water and I was OUTTA there. Felt very fast.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of my bike shoes earlier and pedal on top, as I've practiced.
Run
  • 27m 52s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

The rain started coming down (not too bad, though). My legs felt like LEAD when I began. I saw Jesse on the corner heading out on the course, and he said I looked miserable. I took baby small steps and worked on Chi running techniques, like I have been working on. I would find a person and reel them in, slowly and surely. I never walked, though I admit I really need to work on speed here. Today's 5K was a PB, but still could use some work. My hamstrings and left ankle started to really tighten up here, heading uphill. This made for a bit uncomfortable run, but overall I enjoyed this. I caught my breath and probably could have gone faster. Saw lots of club members and BTer KathyG on my way back. Seeing people I know gave me energy.

A highlight here was seeing the Hoyts again; (and he wasn't that far behind me!!) Inspriational to say the least!
What would you do differently?:

GO FASTER. Power up that hill. Lean more. Think about skipping carrying the water bottle, and hydrating on the bike more. (The water bottle was annoying to carry today; it felt heavy.) Thought about ditching it, but wasn't sure about the rules.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, hydrating, smiling, finding husband. Stretching and getting snacks from the food tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Other random data: Ave HR: 163; Max HR: 174; total calories burned: 1,624.

I finished a disappointing 577/810 overall and 242/401 (prelim results). I managed to beat my goal time of 1:45 by two minutes, but overall, I think I could have done better. What limited my ability? Not enough mileage during the past three weeks (bike and run). I felt a bit weak, despite strong training and good sleep. Wondering if I could have packed in more iron/protein this week in anticipation of today? I really need to commit to training every day (and often twice a day). I hate being passed, and I really want to get better so I can feel good about my overall time!!!

Other minor things to change: have breakfast; wake up earlier and arrive earlier so set-up isn't rushed; stretch more (esp. after).

Event comments:

The swim was really crowded - as was transition. I had less than a foot of space for my stuff. The course was extremely well-marked and staffed. the volunteer staff was amazing - full of energy and enthusiasm. Drawbacks: they ran out of my t-shirt size during packet pick-up; they told me I could get it after my race, but today no one knew anything about it. Wasn't given a sport towel at the end (saw others carrying them). Very well stocked drink stations - Heed is yummy! I will have to try this. Needs more live music - I loved the drum guys at the run turn-around; the happy beat gave me energy! Overall, and amazing operation. I will certainly do this race next year!

Performance: Below average
What a crowded start - I did not feel good about this start a'tall! I got kicked and grabbed until the first bouy, which I drifted away from a bit. Once around the first bouy, I felt much better!! Eased up my stroke a bit. I was trying to catch my breath, though I knew I was slowing in the process. I tried to remember to roll and think long and lean, despite the chaos. Though the course was easy, it wasn't what we had trained on the other night; that portion of the lake was closed due to bacteria. (And I had just swam there on Tuesday - gross! I dolphin kicked until it was too shallow, then I walked in (quickly), took off half of my wetsuit, cap and goggles, and jogged to transition. Saw Jesse (smiling!) as I entered transition.

Awesome Job!!

It was great to see you multiple times through the race. You looked strong on the run...you were on the downhill while I was suffering uphill. You were just behind MaTriMom...I wished I had enough in me to tell you she was about 15 yds ahead of you.

The swim was crazy....so many in a wave...I just let most everyone go before I started to swim...not a very good way to have a good swim time.  Great swim and run times!! Those bike hills were so tough because they just keep going and going...great job on not using your granny gear...I used mine a lot. It is great that you have insight on what to work on.

I wish I had seen you after the race...it was starting to really rain and my kids wanted to go...so we packed up and left. Did you get your preliminary results at the race?

Great race Katherine...wish I could have gone up to cheer you all on. Don't be too hard on yourself...that swim time looked pretty good, I'd settle for that time split! Congratulations, glad you had fun!

No t-shirt and no towel?  Did you at least get a Timberman visor or cap?? Those are awesome swim and run splits! The bike course is difficult, so don't get down on  yourself on it (Ha ha ha ha  we can laugh at my bike split later), but it is a great motivator for next year....so you going to try the 1/2 next year?

I was also wondering if you guys had the bike turn-around at the Veterinarian's office....

Bummer about the rain!

I kind of thought that the limited parking at Ellacoya is a bummer, and don't really want to have to take the shuttle from Gunstock to the Start....did you guys park at the Park or take the shuttle - how was it? Hopefully I'll be able to spot you on Sunday (are you still volunteering?), and if you are, I hope you stay dry! Thanks in advance if you do......!

Last year I parked at Ellacoya, but I got there at 5 AM. They were still letting cars in around 6 AM if I remember. What time are you getting there May? I was planning on a 5:30 arrival. Gunstock would be OK with me since I'm not bringing my bike though.

lobstergirl...i wholeheartedly agree w/ TypeA that you shouldn't be beating yourself up over the results; as long as you can learn something & improve (continually) then it's all good (& hey, your swim split was excellent!)...generally speaking, remember that you're a novice triathlete and higher-level performances take time (usually 5 years to reach your potential), so be patient. don't be in such a hurry to work on speed - endurance training should still be the bulk of your program (w/ greater endurance will come more speed/efficiency of movement). personally, i think that your racing HR was too close to your max which may mean that your ability to work "under threshold" might be an issue. be concerned about improving your base and swim/bike/run technique. as you prepare for next season & decide upon your race schedule, often, the course topography will dictate how to prepare, ie., if your races are hilly, train hills). also, if you feel 'weak' perhaps include a more aggressive strength training routine (working the major muscle groups) will help you. finally, as far as race-prep goes, yes you could do a more thorough job warming-up & spending some time practicing your transitions (esp. on & off the bike)...good luck & thanks for a very informative race report

Great race Katherine - that bike course was "challenging" to say the least, although it made for some fun downhills on the way back. By the way, you can drop your water bottle at an aid station, but not anywhere else. Congrats again!

Subject: Reflections on Timberman

Some post- postrace thoughts...

Reading back through my notes, I sounded so negative, which wasn't my overall impression of my performance.  I did have fun with this one, although I still feel I could have done better.  In the days since Saturday, my neck has been very, very sore!  I'm making adjustments to my bike and to my riding style, and have worked on climbing twice this week.  I know I can't afford a new bike this year, so I'm going to have to tweak and tune this one, as well as my own riding style to get faster.

I saw my official results and I came in the top 25% for swimmers (overall!), which is exciting.  I saw that I really slowed on the bike, and picked up some speed and repassed folks on the run.  Transition times were finally posted, and I was pleased with those.

I think overall, I realized that I LOVE tri-ing and am willing to make personal committments that will help me reach my goals, such as less junk food, more sleep, a willingness to work out a few times a week in the morning, as well as after work, drink more water, work on flexibility and aerobic endurance.  I know I can't change these things all at once, but bit by bit, I think I can incorporate them into a healthier lifestyle.  Although it isn't New Years, I think I'll go and write myself some triathlon resolutions.
