Subject: Cheap personal Pace Clocks or Android Apps?

My local 24 hour fitness had the second hand fall off the Pace Clock at the pool months ago and hasn't fixed it yet.  I'm thinking of changing Gyms, but neither the Ballys or the LA Fitness has a pace clock either.

While one would think that you could get a small digital battery operated pace clcok for your lane, they either don't exist, or are quite expensive. 

The best option I've found so far is Pace Pal, and it isn't bad for an underwater clock for 139.  http://www.mypacepal.com/pace-pal-swimmers-clock.html

But I'm wondering if anyone found a cheaper option.

I was also thinking I might find a android app that I could wrap my phone in a baggie and prop it up at the end of the lane.  Probably not as big as I would want though.

Yes, I do have a 310xt, but just glancing up and seeing the time without stopping to look at my wrist seems like a better option.

I use a lap counter that I wear on my finger.  It showes fastest,slowest and avg time. Also total laps and time

I wear a Timex watch with a lap timer and it serves the same purpose. I wish my pool has a pace clock for the times I forget my watch, but I honestly cannot keep track of my laps so I really need the watch anyway.  They last forever, you can buy one at Target.   It's not cheap at the get go, but it will last for years.   I also wear this watch for triathlons and hit the lap timer at each timing mat, so I can have an idea of where I am throughout the race.  It's been a great watch.

I used a watch as well in the pool and wouldn't trade it.  I have had coach after coach try to take it off me, but the pace clock is just antiquated.  I look at periodically before I turn or after.  It takes some practice but once you get use to it you will begin to hate pace clocks.  It is especially helpful when you can stop doing math and start focusing on swimming.

Your coach must find the watch a threat to his/her coaching knowledge, lol. Why would they care? Oh, yes...swimming tradition...

To the OP, I bought a $30 digital water resistant stopwatch at Dicks with digits about 1.5 cm high. I prop it up in the gutter and use it like a digital pace closedck.

I moslty use my timex though.

It's not a pace clock but the Finis Tempo Trainer Pro is great. It can be set such that it beeps a given interval down to the 100th of a second. I use it for pacing every time I swim. My goggle strap holds it beside my ear. Doing 100 yard intervals today I started at 22.50 seconds per length and decreased 0.25 seconds every set (of three 100s).
It is a great device. Don't have to look for anything just listen to the beep. It can also be used for stroke rate timing by setting it to beep at your desired stroke rate say 64 bpm.

If you have a 310XT and don't want to glance at it, a watch isn't going to do you any good presumably - otherwise you'd use the 310 to pace. I agree though - I wear a 910XT and use the pace clock for pace and the watch for data collection.

If you're willing to try with your phone, I'd try searching the Google Play store for "Stopwatch." I did and found several that have full screen displays. I'm not sure how large your phone is, but you could try it out - most of them are free anyway! I'd certainly try that before dropping 170 bucks on a fancy stopwatch. :-D
