The fam & I just moved to a new house, and the new cable system doesn't have wireless routers integrated into their hardware like the old system did (AT&T Uverse).  In the short term we're renting a wireless router, but I'd like to buy one to cut $10/month off the bill.

- Is there any particular brand or model I should definitely look at?  Or Avoid at all costs?

- How about any features/options I should look for?

Our house is decent sized, but definitely not huge.  We mainly just do normal surfing and some netflix streaming if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

You'll get 100 opinions on this one, however I've always had good luck with NetGear and have had numerous Linksys routers fail early.

I have a Linksys and it's great. Byilt in modem as well, so only 1 box.

I LOVE the USB port on it as I have a 1TB drive which any device in the house can read and write to. Easy file sharing.

Except that GD iTunes is tempermental about it.

Look for "Stateful Packet Inspection" or "SPI" Just about everything else is close to the same over the different brands.

I used to like Linksys until 6-7 years ago. Now everything of theirs seems to just die after somewhere near a year.

I've gone to D-Link and NetGear and am happy with both.

Netgear is solid.
I'm still a fan of Linksys, too. I've got a Linksys E3000 router (bought it refurb from NewEgg for cheap) that just plain rocks.

SPI is a good recommendation.
On the geekier side, older WRT54 routers with the DDRT 3rd-party firmware are pretty darn awesome. The ability to set up a routing bridge is just cool as anything.

My apple airport extreme lasted me from 2005 to 2012.  Just bought another one this year.  Obviously if I bought another I was happy with the first.  I would recommend it to anyone.

I bought refurb to save a buck or two, plus I figure whatever was going to go wrong with it already did........

ditch the rental for sure.

As the others have said both Linksys and Netgear are both good and if you want to spend a few more dollars you can go for a small business router/firewall.  I own a business that sells network equipment into small and mid sized businesses and we sell a ton of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-RV110W-A-NA-K9-Business-Wireless-Firewall/dp/B004ZMXE66

It provides the normal firewall and wireless like any linksys, but it also allows you to remotely connect via an encrypted tunnel back to your house.  So if you're traveling and need to connect to your PC you can.

Also, my cost on the RV110W is around $73 as a Cisco partner so anything in the mid 70's is about as cheap as you can get.

Keeps it simple, and you can even get console access to your machines from your phone as they have iOS/Android clients.

Yup, there's a ton of ways to skin the remote access cat.

I bought whatever was on sale at the time on Newegg.com ( Linksys WRT54G2 ). We have plenty of wi-fi devices (multiple iphones, ipads, 3 laptops, 1 dekstop) and it's been working fine (upgraded it to dd-wrt just for fun).

There's a dead spot in one corner of the house, but I bought a powerline adapter and extended the network there. I hooked up an older 802.11b router to it and hardwired our xbox, TV (builtin netflix app), and blue ray to it. Everything has been rock solid.
