Subject: OWS in Boston Area
Anyone know any other places for open water swimming other than Walden Pond? Chris, Jamie and I tried out Winchester Beach earlier this season, and let's just say...don't go there.

Any other suggestions? It always takes me forever to get up to Walden after work with all the traffic.

I know Stiles pond in Boxford is popular with my local tri group. I  swim at Silver Lake in Wilminton, but lets say you could get filled up with all the weeds if you were to start eating as you swam Until the weeds are too thick to swim safely I will continue to swim at SL. Mind you the weeds are for the first 20 ft of the swim and end of the swim.

i struggle with finding something more closer to boston.

i know that people swim in houghton's pond in the blue hills, i've never gone.

i've thought about swimming at carson beach or in pleasure bay. i've noticed they have lifeguards at malibu beach as well. so i guess one could swim there. sorry for all the dorchester references, i recently moved here and getting familiar with all the places i can train.

when i was up at walden on saturday, i was chatting with someone who swam at carson a few times...he advised to stay away from low tide...you definitely do not want to put your feet down...i believe he mentioned it feeling like "moldy cheese".

not sure how swimming is at the other places, but i need to try one of them on friday after work for an OWS if anyone is interested.

Hi Kim,

Are you talking about Sandy Beach when you say Winchester Beach?  If so, you might want to go back.  I've been swimming there for 3 years and think it's pretty great.  Usually there is no trash on the beach, the water is clean but not Walden clear, and the only company you'll have are geese or ducks. 

It's a short ride from Davis Square and I usually ride up on Tu/Th mornings for a 30-45 minute swim.  Feel free to PM me if you want more info.

I agree with Sunny - I've been swimming at Sandy Beach regularly this summer (a small group from our Masters group has been meeting at 5:45am on Fridays - moving to 6:00am if you are interested!), and it's great.

Yup, that is exactly where we went actually.

 

Maybe it was just because we stayed close to shore, or the specific spot we were in, but there was just tons of algae. Maybe next time I'll just swim out and back instead of following the beach...

Wow - ok, it definitely has to be related to where you swam. I've never noticed a BIT of algae - seriously, none at all. There are plenty of buoys placed in the lake - just pick one, swim to it, pick another ..... You can get in a great swim doing this, and it's really very nice.

Hi Mspina, and thanks for confirming my experience of the beach.  It's nice and clear.  Off to the right or left sides along the shore I've encountered some plants -- weeds, lillypads, etc. -- but swimming out to the buoys is all clear and easy. 

We keep the Tu/Th swim ritual usually meeting at the beach at 6:20-6:30am through Sept.  End of Sept. we'll stage a friendly race there.  I'll post an announcement here.

That sounds like great fun! I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for an announcement.

I've wondered if there were flora issues closer to the shore, but we typically stick to buoy hunting and they are typically just enough in from the shore to avoid anything like that completely. At least so far as we've noticed.

Anyway - looking forward to seeing you at the lake sometime!

Awesome. Well glad to know that I just picked a bad route (or it was a bad day or something...)

 

Sunny, You do the mystic marauders  ride on Wednesday mornings? I've been meaning to join up on one of those.
