Subject: Harrisburg or Philly Marathon
I'm looking to run my first marathon this fall, and I'm deciding between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Both would be about the same drive for me. Anyone race either of these and have any input?

I did Philly half-marathon in 2006, and Harrisburg Marathon in 2007, so I've done both events. I guess it depends on what kind of race you would prefer to do. Philly is a much bigger race. Parking will be a pain, it'll be congested at the start, but it'll have that "Big Race" feel -- lots of folks along the course cheering you on, music, etc. Harrisburg is much more low key. You can park very close to the start, getting in and out is a lot easier, but there will be long stretches of the run where you won't have much in the way of "crowd support". The course is not bad, but parts of it are a bit boring -- like running through an industrial park... If you do Harrisburg, plan on carrying some of your own nutrition. They only had water on the course until something like mile 10, then they had gatorade or cytomax or some kind of sports drink, and only had gels at a couple of the aid stations well into the race.

Bottom line - do you want to do a "Big Race", and deal with the logistical hassles that entails (parking, long porta-potty lines, congested start, etc.) or would you prefer something more no-frills, but easier logistically?

I am planning on doing the Harrisburg marathon.

Logistical reasons:

Harrisburg; I live 10 min away, it is $45.00 by Nov 2 and I still get a shirt. Smile

Philadelphia; 2 hours away, it is $80.00 by Jun 30

I did both races too and agree with all of this. Harrisburg could be much better with just a little course re-routing and better on course support but Philly is better overall.

Am registered for Philly Half. I like the excitement/feel of big races and from the sound of it, the Philly one is like that. However- i did hear from Wendi (G8RSAX on BT) that it was cold/rainy/hilly last year, so I'm hoping the conditions improve this year.

Does anyone know if Philly sold out last year??? I have an Ironman, HIM and an Oly to pay for in the next two weeks and am hoping to hold off for about a month to register for the PHLY marathon. But if it's going to sell out soon, I'm gonna have to register.

Thanks!

I believe the marathon and half marathon sold out last year, but don't know how far in advance they sold out. The 8K did not sell out, but I'm sure you don't want to run 5 miles when you were hoping for 26.2.

thanks so much!!! I'm thinking I'm gonna press my luck and just pay for it in a few weeks. If it sells out, I may just jump in and be a rogue runner

Both sold out last year which is why i ended up in harrisburg. Philly is not really hilly although there are a couple. It is pretty cool to run right through center city!

Both the marathon and half sold out last year (I think the half marathon sold out as well in 2006 but the marathon didn't sell out that year or didn't until race weekend).  A large part of why it sold out was as a result of the whole Chicago Marathon debacle, where many of those participates raced again last fall and many marathons, including Philly I believe, gave those people discounts to race again.  But I still wouldn't be surprised if it sold out again this year- I think I remember it did around the time of the Marine Corps Marathon last year.

Signed up for Harrisburg today. Easy choice for me; I live in Harrisburg. Though, If anyone would have said to me one year ago that I was going to do a half marathon in one year's time, I would have laughed. That also includes 5ks, 10ks, 15ks, duathlons and triathlons. My, how things change in one year's time.
