Subject: jelly beans vs. sport beans??
O-kay, so is there REALLY a difference between regular jelly beans and the sport beans? I've been reading that jelly beans are a great thing to eat when your workouts are more than an hour long b/c they help you "refuel." But, the sport beans are $$$$ and jelly beans not so much. Has anyone ever used them (reg. or sport??) during a workout/long run?? Any input would be great!

From the JellyBelly website FAQ:

Question:
What makes Sport beans jelly beans different from regular jelly beans?
Answer:
Sport Beans jelly beans are specially formulated with sports performance in mind. Sport Beans jelly beans provide a source of easily digestible carbohydrate for fuel, the electrolytes sodium and potassium for proper fluid balance, and B1, B2, B3, and C vitamins for energy metabolism and good health.

also difference in the ones with caffeine to help out on those long runs or rides. I have used the sport beans esp since I got a ton of them for free at my last race.

Lately, I have started using candy on my bricks (hot tamales or mike & ikes) as a distraction.  Since I don't use them for anything other than sugar and motivation, I don't see the point of spending extra money on the sportbeans.  The "easily digestible carbohydrates" in the sport beans are nothing exciting... just sugar and corn syrup.  Same stuff that's in the regular jelly beans.

Sport beans strike me as gimmicky.  Generally, I use gels and sportsdrink to get my calories/electrolytes/caffiene - I only take in around 220 calories per hour on long workouts, but I still find the drinks and gels are way more practical than anything else.

Oh my!  I love how jelly belly is telling us that you will get health benefits from eating their junky food.  Sheesh.  Marketing.

I've been thinking of giving the sports beans with caffeine a go on long rides. I heard the fruit punch ones are good. Any one else tasted them?

If you like the flavor of Hawaiian Punch, then you'll probably dig the fruit punch Sport Beans. I thought they were pretty tasty. I like them and the orange ones the best. (and yes, they probably are pretty gimicky, but they do come in a conveniently sized package)

I swear by the Sport Beans, orange (not caffeinated) are the only flavor I like.

The reason I use them is because of the electrolytes. I also use Mike & Ike's as a compliment to the Sport Beans but for me I think they work well when I'm just doing water and then the Beans.

I have a very good friend who's been running on Skittles for years.  She's even got different colored ones tattooed around her 26.2 tat for each marathon she's run.

According to her (& her guru Jeff Galloway) - it's all about the sugar &  the distraction.

Go to the candy isle and look for something that looks tasty to you and has carbs and little fat.

Lots of gummy type stuff works. Sugar babies are good and different.

I even eat candy bars the small 25-80 calorie oness while doing IM training and racing. You just need calories that your body can digets easily. Stuff with chocolate has fat which isn't as good but I can handle it...chocolate covered pretzels are my favorite on long rides.

Candy is about 10% the cost of gels, sports beans and the like and I find it tastes better. I don't eat candy other than long rides..so a little reward for doing my long stuff.

The sport beans are a little bigger and a little saltier than regular jelly beans.  I like them a lot, especially the caffeinated flavors.  I could just as easily use a bag of gummy bears on my long runs.

I thought I was the only one...I converted from sports beans (fav are the orange ones) to jelly beans a few months ago. I feel fine and my wallet is feeling even better.
