Sunny
Total Time = 2h 54m 17s
Overall Rank = 364/494
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/7
Pre-race routine:

coffee, and "breakfast" then vit h2o, check backpack , drove to site, left stuff @ transition, got marked , then found BT tent and friendly faces.
Event warmup:

none really.
Swim
  • 33m 3s
  • 1408 yards
  • 02m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

water was clearer than expected- only a few veggies floating by, started to the back but still had a lot of people criss crossing in front of me - seems like I'd get a rhythm going & would have to shift due to others- overall for me it could have been worse- and can always be a lot better
What would you do differently?:

i just really need to improve my swim
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

first time i used a one piece suit- felt like I was forgeting something as I left transition!
What would you do differently?:

shoes on bike-
Bike
  • 1h 20m 39s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 18.52 mile/hr
Comments:

could probably have improved my time a bit- but I was concerned about saving something for the run. Need a 2nd water cage on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

more liquids.
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

rack was close to entrance-and some wise soul had marked the rack w/ a ballon- coming in from the bike my rt pedal clip was stuck- really had trouble getting rt foot off the bike
What would you do differently?:

fix the shoe thing, carry more water, be a bit more aggressive
Run
  • 55m 18s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

as came in on bike felt backs of legs- calves & hamstrings really tight- was really concerned might get cramping issues...tried a gel & few oz water at run start- 1st time used gel- and used the 1st 3 water stops HR was higher than I liked for much of the run-
What would you do differently?:

need to work on hydration/nutrition so it's not hit or miss. Could possibly have gone a bit faster- might have been enough to catch #1 who ran by me @ mile 3 .
Post race
Warm down:

those heavenly sponges at the finish! walked around- didn't really stretch & should have

What limited your ability to perform faster:

fear of burning out , nutrition/hydration and just needing to get my speed up, learn how hard I can push wothout blowing up

Event comments:

Mass BTers made this a really fun race- and a surprise 2nd in my AG made it a good day also. I love this sport!
Thank you Max, Laura, May, Kathy G.,Joe, Joe, Glen,Amanda and the rest of the BT crew - aren't we lucky to be able to have this much fun & be legal ??!!

CONGRATS again on your 2nd place win! And your first Olympic!

I had such a blast meeting you Joanne - you are an amazing athlete! Max, Joe and I were walking over to go see prelim results and when we heard your name we started screaming like a bunch of crazies! We were sooo happy....I saw BODonuts taking your pic when you got your medal...I've  yet to check the new pics in anyone's albums for Cranberry, but I can't wait to see them!

You are a brave woman trying a gel for the first time during a first-time distance race Fearless, fit, fabulous, fifty - you're truly an inspiration. Next year, don't let that woman pass you!

Great job Joanne on getting second in your age group, although I have to protest, there is no way you are supposed to be in the 50-54 age group .  It was nice meeting all of you.  Way to bring home the hardware

WOW Careful- all these Kudos are going to my head! I had a great time-Isn't it so cool to just do things that are FUN- swim , bike, run (after all this is how kids PLAY!) stay healthy in the process- meet like minded people - and keep setting new goals- who knows - maybe we can have a Team Bt at Kona!

Ok first off, congrats again on the hardware. When I asked you what the 54 was for, I never bothered to do the math. In my mind you were much closer to my age, like late 30's. When I realized (post race delirium) that you medaled in your age group, I did the math and my mouth hit the floor. The ID's need to be checked better for age groups

Second, thank you for being brave enough to join me an Mark for dinner on Sat. Your pressence lightend up the conversation an I had a great time. Look foward to seeing you again.

Congratulations on a great race, and a great season (I looked in on some of your other races). You're in the 50-54 age group?!? I saw Max's pictures. Come on, I bet the competition is asking for a DOB audit! Nice work.

Joanne,

Great race. Great people. What more could you ask for. YOu are an amazing athlete! I think you have a very good shot next year since you held back a little this year. Looking forward to next year already. Hope to see you at a race before then.
