Pre-race routine:

Sat around in the rain after getting there way too early. They were stocked with volunteers, so registration took all of 3 minutes. So I sat down and let it rain on me for a while then peeled off my extra layers and checked my stuff.
Event warmup:

Jogged about a half-mile and stretched. Tried to stay warm.
Run
  • 1h 04m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

I tried to take the first mile kind of easy, which was facilitated well by the crowds. Wow, were there a lot of women! It was crazy. The time of the first mile sat well with me, and I settled in to a slightly harder pace. I was kind of shocked by my second mile time and tried to ease back just a little bit. There were a couple of inclines during the 3rd mile. Once I hit the halfway point, all I tried to do was keep going as fast as I could without blowing up. Most times, when I looked at my watch (which I never did during any inclines), I was around 182 or 183. Right around my LTHR. The last mile was not the most pleasant, but I was so happy to be kicking the a$$ of my goal time I didn't care! It is so weird to run without swimming and biking first. :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except get there at least an hour later!
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around a little bit, turned in my chip, got my bag, and tried in vain to find something dry to wear.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing much. In ways, it was perfect weather for a race. I wasn't overheated at all. I'm super happy with my time; I had hoped for an 11 min/mile pace and thought MAYBE I could do 10:30. Doing <10:20 is just awesome for me.

Event comments:

There's definately a girl-power vibe in this race, which can actually get on my nerves a little bit, but it is very cool. The water stops didn't have enough volunteers. I actually had to come to a complete stop at one and wait for a cup. Well organized otherwise.

I definitely agree that getting there later would be better. They recommended arriving by 10 am; I got there at 10:30 worried that I was late. :-P I guess I was subconsciously leaving time to set up my transition area and pump my tires! Rain or no rain, waiting around for an hour and a half is no fun.

Congrats on your great performance!

Great job Amanda!! You were so fast. It sounds like a fun course to run - even better if it wasn't raining. If I am up there next year I want to try this race.

Yeah *hangs head in shame*. It's just too rah-rah for me. When I saw that 2nd mile split, I thought, "Oh shit! I'm going too fast. I'm going to blow up!"

A lot of that rah-rah gets on my nerves too. I had to laugh yesterday (at the Tufts 10K) when we *finally* started moving and the announcer's enthusiastic "Everyone - wave at the camera - right here!!" boomed out of fifty different loudspeakers, mostly nowhere near the camera...

Beating the pace time you wanted by more than 30s/mile--whoa!! Good race, there.
