Comments: Started at the back of the runners and in front of the walkers. As we left I was passed by lots and lots of people. Focused on what I wanted to do and kept my pace. This was the first nice day after 9 days of rain. Fortunate it was dry and the road was clean of debris. I pushed the negative thoughts out of my head as so many people passed me. Yes I was even passed a number of times by the same three legged dog. His owner let him make some business than she picked it up and ran it over to the garabage can...so the three legged dog passed me three times. Kevin and Emily placed them where I would see them 4 times on the race...great motivation. It was quite windy in spots depending on if it was open or woody. I was exicted to see 11:15 at first mile marker. Emily gave me a nice high 5 as I passed her almost at the end of the first loop. At the first loop I had run in 17:46 which put me 30 seconds over a 35 minute 5K. My goal was to start and try to increase my pace through the race. The second mile, I was ran 10:58 but I wasn't able to tell that while racing...since I took a split at first lap. Here I did pass some people...guy with a jogging stroller and two women jogging and talking. I ran by Kevin and Emily took some water and was in for the last little bit. Ran to the turn around and saw I had gained one some of the folks I has seen the lap before. Two women were talking and jogging just in front of me. I accelerated down the hill, high fived Emily again made the last corner and started running fast to the finish, I passed the two women who didn't care, but once they saw they could make it under 35 minutes...they passed me back. The last 1.1 miles I did in 12:38 I was so excited to realize that I was negative splitting and that I was going to make my under 35 minute goal!!! First lap 17:46, second lap 17:07 Felt good mentally through the whole race...pushed few negative thoughts from my mind in first .5 mile and they never came back. Met both my time goal and my running faster as the race progressed goa. I have no clue what my results were...don't really care...did it to compete against me and I did what I set out to do!!! My best 5K in a tri is 37:55. I'm not sure typically how much faster people run stand alones vs the race in tris? Anyone know? What would you do differently?: See if I can push myself a little more. Next 5K next month, my goal will be to break 34:30. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walked about 5 minutes, ate a banana and had some water. Walked back to the car, did some leg drains...elevated legs to get lactic acid out. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being a slow runner, need to lose 30 more pounds, learning to pace myself so I finish giving it my all. Event comments: First annual race and they did a good job. I'm not sure what is typical for a running race...free food activities but the wind made it hard for all of them. I had toast w/PB for breakfast. Had a bit of upset stomach and I think I ate to much fiber yesterday. Took two imodium and drove to race. My goal since Sept. '04 was to run a 5K under 35 minutes but having never run a stand alone race didn't know what to expect.
I wasn't sure what to wear. It was freezing at the start location...about 50 with gusts of 40 mph.
I ran with Emily for 14 or so minutes with a couple of accels. Finished run and the race started 4 minutes later...felt I timed warm up perfectly.
After warm up felt okay just running in a wicking tank top..but left my running long pants over my shorts.
