Pre-race routine:

Well...I got called into emerg the night before the race for a multiple trauma. Great learning night...not to great for pre race rest...Got to bed about 1230, woke up at 530 to drive out to the race site. About 2 hrs later I found myself at the race site and checked in. Had some cereal and toast for bfast.
Event warmup:

Splashed around in "Lake Gross"...you will find out why it is called Lake Gross below...
Swim
  • 27m 17s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Lake Grossssssssssssssssssssssss. For the entire distance of the lap we had to swim through these slimy weeds...and more weeds...and more weeds. Lake Gross also had a sulpher-y smell and taste to it. Threw up while swimming once because I accidentally swallowed some of Lake Gross. Blech. Fairly slow but every stroke received a handful of weeds. I got out of the lake covered in strings of slime.

Used to swims where the weeds are in the shallow part of the lake...but these weeds just never went away! Otherwise the swim was fine..the field was fairly small and there wasn't a whole lot of traffic after the first 50m.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster? Pick a lake not full of gross weeds?
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Felt transition went fairly well. Time included in bike time. Pretty long run from the water to transition and then a run with the bike again to the mount line.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 20s
  • 40 kms
  • 27.80 km/hr
Comments:

Bike went well for the first 25km or so. Then my lack of bike fitness caught up to me. I need to pick it up bike wise...that is for sure! I didn't get passed too much until the last 15km...quads were a burning!

What would you do differently?:

Get more bike fitness...
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Time with bike time. I kind of had an awkward dismount and then had to run down a gravel path...it wasn't exactly smooth...haha
Run
  • 1h 13m 31s
  • 10 kms
  • 07m 21s  min/km
Comments:

Slowwwww....

Bit of a frustrating effort for me. I couldn't get into a rhythm with the run. Maybe it would have been better if my bike fitness had been up to par for an oly, but I struggled pretty much through the entire course.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously need to run more....and specifically if I do this race again, need to do more trail running.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Low level of fitness compared to 2011. I'm probably fitter than I was in 2009-2010...but compared to last year this year has been a bit disappointing due to time. School kicked my butt from Feb-June...so I've probably only been really back to training for 6 weeks. I guess it can only go up from here?

Let's go Coach Mike...guess that was the kick in the ass I needed.

Event comments:

Don't know if I will be back to swim in Lake Gross. Maybe a du? Haha.

Nice work!  There is nothing more annoying than swimming in weeds and slime!

Both my son and I both agree on the Lake Gross description!!

We are going to look for an alternative next year!

The trail run was a killer!

Yay Melissa! Way to stick with it. Multiple traumas can be fun, though. Definitely a good learning night.

Racing post call is not exactly a PR strategy. At least it was some cool stuff and not just drunks. Nice job on the race though, even with the puke swim.

I think you did really well considering your night before and your training year.  Heck, most people would have bailed since they were in the ER most of the night. You are tough, Princess. That Lake sounds really awful. Was it like that before?

Good race for you and the kick in the pants you needed. Let's BUILD on this fitness and keep it rolling all the way to IM FRANCE.

This is the BEGINNING of your season, not the end.

You are a rock star considering you were helping save lives only 5 hours before you had to leave for the race. That tops any race result you'll ever get.

Congrats and let's keep it rolling!!

Great job on the race.  I'm impressed with what training you do get in with a hectic school schedule.  Now you know what to do to get ready for the next BIG one.

You know, it's kind of hard to be an awesome doc and continue training to be an even awesomer doc and keep up your more-than-awesome tri training AND be up half the night saving lives, then pull a pretty perfect race out of your azz the next day.

But you did.
