I suspect it is nothing more than Christie is too busy to be bothered with Mitt right now, but it is enough to make me wonder if Christie is just trying to distance himself from Mitt.  After all, where has Mitt been during this crisis?

What exactly is a presidential candidate supposed to do during a natural disaster? He doesn't really have an office or resources for things other than campaigning.

My take is that there are still people suffering and doing without power, heat, etc.  in NJ and Christie does not think it appropriate to attend a rally. I don't read any more into it.

Just yesterday it was reported that Christie took a call from AF1 by the President and Obama put Bruce Springsteen on the phone to talk with the governer....and the gov. admitted that he was a HUGE Springsteen fan...... Christie hates Romney.

I think people are seeing too much politics in this.  Plain and simple:

Mitt Romney is running for president and he has campaigning to do in these last few hours.  He'll try to take advantage of anyone popular (Christy) to win additional votes.  Nothing wrong with this - it's what's expected.  And he waited until very late (Sunday night).

Chris Christy's state is a freakin' MESS!  Power outages, still flooding, people homeless, cold weather, a new storm coming in tomorrow, the election today...  He's just trying to keep his fellow Jerseyites alive.  He has no time for politics or campaigning.  I'll bet he fills his spare 2 hours a day with what he needs - sleep.

Simple as that.

And as for "Where has Mitt been during this crisis?"  Doing what he should've been doing.  He shut down the negative Obama attacks during the storm (sure the cronies on both sides kept it up, but not him), kept doing some tame campaigning, and even turned a couple campaign events into donation collections for those in need.  It would've been a cheesy political stunt to visit NJ or NY during the crisis.  Not his job.  That's what the President did - his job.  I think Obama, Christy and yes, Romney ALL did the right moves and actions during the storm crisis and recovery.

There.  I said it!  Mr. "Vote for Obama" just praised Romney.  But credit is due where it's due.  he and his advisers made the right call.  This past week has been handled as well as they could've on all sides both politically and directly.  I've got no complaints.

While Mitt may have limited power, at the very least should have offered a helping hand. A simple, "what can I do to help?" would have gone a long way in my book. (not that my book really matters).  His lack of involvement makes me question if he would have the wherewithal to handle a catastrophe of this size if he were elected president.  As far as I can tell he simply turned a blind eye and shrugged it off.

Yes this state is a mess, Christie is doing a fantastic job (that is very hard for me to say and this is probably the only time during his reign that I feel he did something for the people), but there is no question in my mind that he has done everything he can to keep this state from falling apart at the seams.

at at least one of his rallies this weekend, he collected food and supplies to send into communities hit by the storm.  i'm no mitt fan, but he really doesn't have the power/position to help out any more directly.

And he was criticized for it because the Red Cross apparently prefers cash. Talk about a no-win situation.

This.

What would the reaction be if Christie stepped away from his current duties as Governor to a stricken state to participate in a rally? Especially when he’s said over and over again that the Presidential Election is way, way down on his list of priorities right now.

Romney’s in a tough spot. He really doesn’t belong here, because as others have said, he has no particular authority to do anything other than nod his head empathetically and make speeches about the resilience of New Jerseyans and New Yorkers, which most people, myself included, would probably view with some cynicism.

The only thing I will say is that, given that there’s a possibility that he will, in a few short months, become the President and will therefore take over the role of overseeing the federal response to the disaster, it would have been nice if he said something like, “If I’m elected president, I want to assure the victims of this disaster that you will continue to have the full support and commitment of the federal government.”

I know that there are people who have voiced concern over what it might mean to the effort if there was a change in leadership in the middle of the recovery. So yes, I suppose it goes without saying, but it would have been a meaningful gesture.

Christie thought Obama said, "You'll have a ball!" Oops.
