... down!!

As in one year and counting down to retirement from the U.S. Navy.

I'm both excited and scared at the same time.  I've known nothing but military life for 19 years.  I'm very curious what the real world holds in store for me.

Don't watch Shawshank RedemptionLaughing

Thanks for your service!  That's a nice body of work considering the time period.  I bet you'll find the civilian workplace very accommodating to someone with your credentials.

Again, Thanks!

I believe it's called being a lifer.

I was in the Navy from 91 to 97 and I know back in 2011 I thought "Hey, if I would have stayed in I would be retired right now".  To which my wife replied, and you'd be on your third wife by now.  lol

Thanks for your service and good luck your last year.  Are you on a shore rotation or finishing out at sea?

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, what's protocol these days? Once you hit 20, do they automatically send you packin' or can you choose to stay in if you so desire?

That depends on your rank (I'll speak for the enlisted).  E-6 you can stay till 20 and you are retired.  E-7 you can stay till 22 years, E-8 equals 24, E-9 is 30.  Of course like with anything else they can extend or not your service.  You know, it's all what the need of the Navy is (or whatever branch).

Now-a-days, an E6 gets the boot at 20.  I'm in that situation.  E7 gets until 24, E8 to 26, E9 to 30.

Even if I were E9, I'd be done.  I've had all I can take.  It's time to move on.
