Subject: PSA : Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!A public service annoucement for all of you training in this intense heat for long course triathlons. Sunday night I was taken to the ER with severe flank pain that turned out to be kidney stones. For those of you who have had them you know the pain I am talking about, for those of you who haven't it is the most intense pain you will ever feel in your life. A CT scan revealed 2 stones in my left kidney, the larger of the two had almost passed leaving the smaller one to get through. After meeting with my urologist today, he was 99% sure that my stones were caused by severe dehydration during training. We have had some incredibly hot days here recently (100*+) and it has been a challenge to try and stay hydrated during long training days. Please learn from my experience and hydrate well before, during, and after workouts. Trust me you DO NOT want to have kidney stones. |
