Like many of use here, I only have one bike, a tri bike. It came with the standard 12-23 rear casette. When I got new wheels, I decided what the heck, get a new cassette also. So, I got a 12-27, thinking I had both ends covered between the 2 cassettes depending on how many flats vs. hills I might do. Most of my races have significant hills, and I have no cycling background, so I didn't know what I was missng..

Put on the new cassette (and the LBS put on a new chain), and WOW what a difference. No more standing to get up hills, no more burning those watches. Felt great during the ride, fresh.

I had no idea what I was missing until the first big hill that I spun up at 88. What a difference, I would be standing and panting on the 23.

For anybody on the fence, or like me who knows nothing about bikes, it makes a huge difference.

There's nothing like being able to spin up the hills.

Interesting, I might try this for my next race.

Thanks for the tip

I train with a 12-27, and race on a 12-25.  I'm definitely a believer.

There's nothing honorable about nuking your legs.

My current bike has a 12-25 and I just bought a 12-27 since I have a very hilly race coming up. Good to hear that it's helped you out, since I'm hoping for similar results.

Well, if you can afford to burn watches I can see no problem in having lots of cassettes.

Congrats on the versatility you now have.

LOL.  Had to re-read the OP to catch that one.

To to OP, I have a SRAM 12-26 on my training wheels, but got a 11-23 for my race wheels since I only race on flat courses.

You need to longer chain for the 12-26 or is it an issue? Just curious as I've seen mention in other articles ( and the OP got a new chain )of chain length being a concern.

I used to use the SRAM 12-26 in races. I trained on a 12-27.

The 12-26 came on the bike; the 11-23 runs fine with the same chain.  It could have been a problem if it was the other way around.

I needed a new chain because the old one was was too small to accomodate the longer reach needed for the 27 instead of the 23. And it was just plain old and used up, like my typing skills.

Oh well, I just went the other direction 11/23 to a 12/27. I put a quick ten miles of hills on it this afternoon and it worked as advertised. I have a hill leaving my neighborhood that I swear would be a double black diamond run if it had moguls, I can't wait to try it out tomorrow if i get a chance to ride.

When I get new bikes my standard is 12-27. I even have the new last year Sram 11-28 perfect for hilly courses like Lake Placid.
