As the days grow shorter, the weather colder, and the local tri scene dries up for the season how do you stay motivated to work out and train?

It is a couple of months to ski/snowboard season to take up my time and the tri training is just getting to feel to repetitive. The treadmill just feels like a death march each time I get on it(mostly because of all the fine rain lately, not the cool weather.) I'm trying to mix in different stuff like intervals and hill sprints just for a change. What type of time should I be investing in each week for maintenance?

This is my first off season and I am starting to get the blues. How do you continue with your balanced training just to maintain it for the winter? Any suggestions / ideas on a schedule.

Mark

I feel your pain!  Maybe you could schedule a couple of road races in the future or xc ski racing.  The competitive fire is good for the winter training 'blues'.

It sort of depends on your goals for the winter. If you want to improve your times for next years races, you need to be motivated to train. Sign up for or at least find the first race for next year. If you are just trying to maintain fitness overall, or don't want to burn out on s/b/r, train as you would for ski/snowboarding to maintain optimal fitness levels.  In the spring, switch back to more specific tri-training.

It also may help to have some structure, as in a specific training plan to follow if you are going with plan A above.  There are plenty around, both here and elsewhere.  But that way, you only have to motivate yourself to stay on schedule, and not to decide what to do each day/week. And congratulations on finishing your first season.

Well, there are a few thing that keep me motivated:

  • First of all like that the training is actually a bit less structured
  • I really like runnning outside if it is cold and snowy outside - it's a complete different experience
  • There are still a few competitions during the winter - mostly 10k

If you are not part of a swim club, you could join the local masters club, too.

Take care

Speaking of winter blues...

I'll do little things like, I don't know, for instance. I'll put my beanie on that I race in when it's colder out and then think to myself "ok now put the glasses on, throw the shoes on, grab a drink of water and GO OUT OF THE TRANSITION ZONE!!!1!!!1!!.

Oh wait, I'm just in my room packing for class....crap.

Or I'll pass someone on their left who's walking on the sidewalk like I'm passing them on the bike and get a little excited about passing someone and then realize I'm not racing and it doesn't really matter!

It's going to be a long winter....

dude, i thought i was alone in the winter blues, we should start a support group and check in like a challenge to keep us all motiviated. I though i used to get it pretty bad when i could not golf for a month or two, i think this winter is going to be even worse, now that i will have limited time to SBR, and the dreadmill sucks.

To keep the blues away I try different classes at the Gym, mix-up my workout routine and allow myself "goof-off" time without feeling guilty for spending a sunday afternoon watching football instead of biking/running outside  ...... "Summer is coming" .... find a race(s) for the spring and get registered. I live in the midwest, but find opportunities to bike/run outside on the weekends which helps

OK I am aware of the fact that I am totally odd, but I can't wait for it to snow.....

Bring on the xc skiing and the winter running!! Guess there is a reason I was born Canadian.

Yeah, I'm starting to recall the dark, early, icy morning runs when I drive the streets that I switch to when the much-more-fun bike paths get covered with snow. I can't say I'm looking forward to those runs, but I'm already ahead of my pace from last fall, so there will be improvement to look forward to. The long, slow runs on the weekends are the highlights of my winter training. The bike trainer is very effective but not something to look forward to.

i try to swim in a pool at tthe house but its cold and i get brainfreeze and chills for the rst of the day.

Running will come back as soon as my foot heels i hope....and spin classes will keep my motivation up for cycling. But i am hoping to get my hands on a nice training plan to rip up my times for next season!! fill in ome time throughout the winter....

I definitely sympathize with the cold weather blues, man. It makes it increasingly difficult to get rides in after work, and I hate riding indoors.

I just try to build a base, stay as active as possible and hopefully improve in one way or another by Spring.

winter won't affect my swimming or running, but I don't really like not having an option to riding indoors.

Take some time to relax. Recovery is just as important as your hard training sessions. That being said, don't spend your nights and weekends on your couch covered in pringles and empty beer bottles.

Go for mountain bike rides (great for improving bike handling skills and leg strength), xc skiing, hiking, do some different exercising to give your mind and body a change of pace
