Theres a triathlon day coming up in the city i'm currently residing in which is in about 2 n a half weeks.

I'm also currently awaiting an ankle reconstruction within the next 2 months.

My question is, should I  go ahead an participate  even though i am so extremely undertrained, or should i just wait till im recovered and rehabilatated. The races vary from sprint to oly to HIM.

As much as I would like to say "suck it up and push through it" the fact is if there is a chance of making the ankle worse than you should wait the rehab time and then ease back into in to tris.

Swim your heart out, bike your guts out...walk/jog within your limits for the run.

If you just want to do it to have fun.

Both opinions noted, i can heavily tape my ankle up to prevent further injury. So it might be alright to walk/lightly jog 5kms

I dont think i can do anything for just "Fun" im too competitive!

I had achilles reconstruction last November. I purposely put it off so that I could race the frist 1/2 of cyclocross season last year. My doctor told me it was OK and I couldn't make anything worse which he wouldn't be able to fix that day.

I'm glad that I did as I at least got 3-4 races in last fall before being laid up for 2 months and another 2 months of silly light workouts.

This spring, my performance was off and it shows in my times for races I did in 2007 versus 2008. But, I'm now back where I was last year and am racing well.

I say you go ahead, but see if your doc agrees.

I also would see what your doctor says.

Me, I would wait until after the ankle has been factory reconditioned.

Try this, go to the race with a friend and cheer him/her on. Or go and take pictures for someone. Or just go and watch all the cute ladies, see if you can get some phone numbers .

Obviously every case is different and only you and your Dr. know best, but if you can can do the race just 'getting through it' then I would. Its good for the soul. I had ankle surgery and put it off during soccer season (I played soccer at the time) because I wanted to play some games doing what I could rather than missing the whole season recovering. My Dr. said what the previous posters' said, that if I could deal with the pain and walk/run as I was able, then he could fix any other damage it did. Again, each case is different (mine was ligament, some tendon damage, and bone issues, not achilles).

that to me tells me you should wait and recover. Tris will still be there when you get back healthy

AS someone who sat out my last tri season with 5 months of injury. I'd say NO don't be stupid  there are many more races to come but you only get one body.

does it have teams?  do it in a team if you can.  if not volunteer and help out.

By increasing your activity to that sort of level 2 weeks before your reconstruction will mean that the surgeon may have a more difficult time in reconnecting your ankle ligaments, the actual ankle joint capsule, and gaining a really good tightening of said ligaments.

This is due to the increased inflammation that will be caused by the repetitive stresses you'll subject yourself to.... Before surgery, the ultimate number 1 goal is to reduce swelling and inflammation.

I would start on some very gentle ankle strengthening work, involving some proprioceptive feedback exercises too.
imo, rest up mate. Youve still got many many more opportunities ahead of you- just make sure you take up those opportunities on a nicely rehabed ankle :D

Wow strong majority in the poll.

Decided to not take part in the run, and still tossing up between doing a team event or just resting.

In the mean time, averaged 33.6 km/h (21 mph for those playing along at home) today on the ride home from work only 5km, but its a good speed tester. Could have been faster if it wasnt for those pesky ppl walkin there dogs off their leash!

Hopefully over the next year i can see steady improvements so that by the time i enter a oly tri... i can be a major chance........ of not coming dead last.
