Expert 757![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Florida | Subject: MY OH MY!!WOW! That's all I can say about trying to find decent roadbike for myself. I am trying to get ready for my first TRI in march, and bought some fantastic running shoes that fit me perfectly from my local running store, got my wetsuit, goggles-cap,sunglasses blah blah blah... But the bike thing is killin me. I don't have alot to spend and have spent weeks on craigslist and ebay trying to find a freaking decent roadbike for under 500.00 Can someone try to help me here. Do i need to live and die by Trek or Specialized? I am gonna use this bike to go to work and back, the gym and back, and to train for TRI's and use in the races. Since im a newb im not worried about shaving .0001200123 seconds off my time. I was looking at a TREK1000SL 2007 model that i might be able to grab for 500, but i see other bikes like the Dawes? that i can grab for 210 plus shipping that'll probably be fine. Am I overthinking this whole thing? I have a tendincy to want the best even when i can't afford it and just getting started. But with bikes i know you can upgrade parts etc... HELP ME PLEASE! |

Master 1702![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Southern Ontario | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!I have a Devinci. I used to get comments all the time about "You don't see those very often." People told me when I was first looking to buy the best I could afford - and used was a better option because you can usually get better components on a better frame for less $. I ended up buying new because it was pretty and the right colours. I didn't realize then what a difference components and accessories make. Best decision on my part? Nope - but I got lucky. I'm looking for a new bike now and I won't make the same mistake. I know I can get more for my money if I buy used - it just might take a little longer... It might take some looking to find what you want - and take your time - you have until the spring right? Basically you want to be comfortable on it. You're going to be spending a fair amount of time in the saddle and you want to make sure it fits. Personally I would want to ride it - instead of ordering on-line - but everything can be changed - so I guess that might be an option. I've learned that everyone has an opinion about brands, but bottom line is that you have to like it enough to ride it ... a lot. |

Expert 1148![]() ![]() ![]() Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!After my first triathlon - on my old mountain bike, I inhereted a 15 year old Cannondale. It was an awesome bike in it's time. Aluminium frame, durace components, but it has shifters on the down tube, and it's quite old. I put new tires and a new seat on it, and have ridden it over 6000 miles in training and several sprints, olys, a 1/2 IM, and a couple of bike tours. It's a very good bike - although very dated. I've trained on it for IronMan this year. I'd suggest that you are right - look for a good used bike, it can carry you a long way. I just bought a high end Kuota tri bike, and it is indeed an awesome improvement, but the Cannondale cost me ~ $100 for parts, and has been a super bike, and I've really enjoyed riding it. Have you looked at places like swap meets and salvation army? |

Expert 757![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Florida | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!Thanks for the great advice so far! Yea I have tried looking at goodwill, salvation army, pawn shops,LBS' with used bikes etc.. cause of economy basically everyone around here in south florida is selling the used bikes the same day they get them I am looking at these two bikes in particular one is a trek 1000sl with: Component Group Shimano Sora Brakeset Alloy Dual Pivot brakes, Shimano Sora STI Dual Control levers Shift Levers Shimano Sora STI Dual Control Front Derailleur Shimano 2203 Rear Derailleur Shimano Tiagra Crankset Bontrager Sport, 30/42/52 teeth Pedals "Look" Bottom Bracket Bontrager ISIS Unspecified Rear Cogs 8-speed, 12 - 26 teeth Chain Unspecified Seatpost Bontrager carbon Saddle Bontrager Race Lux Basic Handlebar Bontrager Spot Rims AlexRims AKX R1.0 Tires Continental Ultra Sport 700 x 23c how much should one pay for this bike in good condition, with tires probably needing to be replaced? Also a trek1500 i might be able to snag for around 450.00-no pedals.carbon fork and seatpost. Picture posted on the ad matches this one on bikepedia-http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?ItemID=10400&Type=bike so i am assuming it has the same components-waiting for conformation from seller about year and any upgrades. Is this price good without pedals? |

Champion 6503![]() ![]() ![]() NOVA - Ironic for an Endurance Athlete | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!If you could just pay about $800 instead of $500, it would open up a whole new world of bikes to you. Skip going out to dinner 5 or 6 times, and you will cover the difference. Go to you Local Bike Shop (LBS). Ask the employees if any of them have a bike that they are looking to get rid of. That can work out to be a great bargain. |

Expert 757![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Florida | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!Thanks Mike, unfortunately with my mortgage and many other bills on limited salary that just isn't doable. And I don't even eat out!! At my LBS I was shown a Trek and a specialized-both 2008's that STARTED at 959.00 Bikes in south florida-seem to be priced above the national avg for the same bikes. my thought process is to get a very good used bike for a little less than buying an entry new one. Thanks though! Edited by BeginnerMan 2008-10-23 11:52 AM |

Master 1702![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Southern Ontario | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!I was told when I was looking that a used bike is usually about half of the new price. The Sora components were the entry level when I bought my bike. Tiagra was one step up, then Ultegra and then Dura-Ace. I've never had any trouble with my Soras - I've taken really good care of the bike and I keep it clean. Here's some stuff I found: http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/latest-bikes/road-bike/trek/PRD_290760_5668crx.aspx http://kingston.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sports-bikes-43cm-Trek-1000-Road-Bike-2005-Model-W0QQAdIdZ69882216 Seems the 1000s are going for about 450-550$. |

Expert 938![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Orange County, California | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!I have the 2006 model of the Trek 1000. I love it. If I had more money in 2006, I would have purchased a bike with something better than Sora shifters. They shift ok, but are not as smooth as higher priced components. They don't make 8 speeds anymore. Everything is 9 and 10 speed now, but you can still get parts for the 8 speed. I paid 680 dollars 2 years ago, and prices have gone up since then. The bike is a good bike, and a great bike for your price point. |

Elite 3022![]() ![]() Preferably on my bike somewhere | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!I'd look for a Giant OCR1 that's a couple of years old. They were $1000 new with Ultegra rear derielluer (sp) and 105 front. Carbon seat post, carbon front forks, and well made. I have a few thousand miles on mine and I've only had to true the rims. They should be available for about your price range, possibly with pedals. At the time, they were considered by many to be one of the better values out there. You'll still get a few years out of it before you need/want to upgrade, and it isn't too expensive. |

I bought a Motobecane Nemesis frame from a BTer and built it up for this year and am placing even better. My road bike was $300 brand new and after 1 year i was able to sell for around $150. |

Master 2460![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!All good suggestions above. Although strangely, the pricey bike (Cervelo) may actually be reasonable from a budget standpoint if you can 1) get 'em used or discount and then 2) treat 'em well and then resell them in the future. The current crop of Cervelos with their stellar reputation will likely retain their resale value far in excess of most of the budget bikes you see out there, and may realistically end up costing you less overall than buying a new $1100 tribike with much lower resale value. |

Extreme Veteran 398![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Southeastern Michigan | Subject: RE: MY OH MY!!I just bought an older bike on Craigslist for $300. A Felt F1 w/ Shimano Dura Ace parts. It is a real lightweight aluminum w/ a carbon fork and fit me perfect. It was a good deal. I don't know if I just got lucky. I would keep looking and looking. But I had to buy clipless pedals, shoes, a new seat and I am still looking for an aerobar. And I set it up on a used trainer from CL ($30). When I am done, I figure I will of spend a total of $800. Actually my mom offered to buy me all the extras listed above for my bday and xmas.... So I really only spent $330...But you get the picture. Hopefully, my boyfriend buys me some cycling clothes too!!! And pays all my race entry fees (j/k)!!! I am real happy with the decision to get an older bike instead of a cheap new bike. It has character. Best wishes! Edited by Bronwyn1968 2008-10-30 5:20 PM |
