Subject: Greetings from Abu Dhabi
Hi all,

Having a competitive swimming past (looonng past), I recently tagged along to a tri-club swimming workout, thinking that I would fare quite well (ie., not embarass myself). Shock and horror, however prevailed! I felt like I was going to drown after the first 200 m. This motivated me to do something about my deplorable state of fitness, so I've been swimming and walking for the past month, and asking anyone who has done one loads and loads of questions about what exactly goes on in a triathlon.

I became more and more interested in this all-around approach to sport and fitness, and last week, I decided to train for a sprint being held here in October. However, after it took me 27 minutes to walk 3k this evening, I began to question my wisdom. Though I can be quite determined, I recognised that I'm terribly out of shape, not all that athletic, and haven't worked out regularly in years. Hoping for some sort of encouragement, I hopped on line to see what I might be able to find about training, etc., and was relieved to find this site. The training schedule examples provide a slow build up, and I'm beginning to see that it really may be possible for me to get ready in time for October. Now I'm both rarin' to get out there and train and scared to death - I haven't cycled in ages! 'Tis grand to be on board with y'all.

Cheers,
Jo

Welcome Jo, I know you will be able to do your tri in October. Just be sure to go gently and slowly into your trainin so you can avoid injuries caused by the "too much too soon" syndrome.

Good luck -- glad you found us.

Hello there Jo and welcome aboard.

I'm going to have to look you up on a map. Not quite familiar with the UAE!

Don't get discouraged. You've got about eight months and that's plenty of time to get yourself in shape. Try the couch to Sprint or Olympic running programs located on the main website. I'm doing the couch to Sprint and am making great progress. Five weeks ago I couldn't run for 30 sec w/o wanting to stop. This morning I ran 1/2 mile before stopping. I'm slow but all triathletes are slow when they start. They're building a base. So don't worry about it. You'll do fine. We're all here rooting for ya'. Be sure to fill out your logs so we can help you track your progress. Good luck and happy training!

Ovetta.

Welcome! Take it slow andd you will be just fine. The best thing about Triatlon is that that everyone who finishes, WINS. Time only matters to some, have some fun.

hey!  welcome to the board!

UAE - united arab emirites?  correct?  i have a question for you...i recently read an article in the smithsonian about the place and WOW!  its sounds beautiful and terribly rich.  sounds like the ultimate vacation or living spot.  after reading the article, i decided to start saving up for a house one one of the 'palm fronds' of the palm tree resort island they r building.    is it a safe place?  u know, being smack dab in the middle east and seemingly reeking of western culture with extravagent hotels, high-rises, tech and foreigners too.  but what do i know...i barely make it out of ohio.

please enlighten and glad to have u here...maybe u can put my fam up for a few weeks and i can come down and train with u?

hiya Jo,

so, how do you like UAE?  My brother was stationed there several times and seemed to like it, except that he kept being sent without his family.

You'll be back in form in no time, having been a swimmer before.  Aren't those master workouts amazing?  I never could hang with them and gave up even trying.  I'm such a poser!  LOL  Welcome to the board!

Hang in there Jo, don't worry about your running time now. Start slowly by walking, fast walking, then combine walking and some running and finally running. Remember to go slowly and at YOUR own pace. In yoga, my instructor stresses "non-injury" and "non-envy" of my neighbour's prowess; the same goes for any sport. You can probably do a sprint tri right now but by October you will be ready to compete in a sprint tri. Concentrate on form, not only in running, but in all three discipines. Good luck....

Welcome Jo,

You are going to live this Tri stuff.

I was in the UAE,  I was escorting out equipment home on a ship to Germany and the ship broke down so we had about a week there. We had an awesome time but I am sure it is even better now.Good luck on your goals.
