Subject: Fish poo or chlorine?

My road rash has healed somewhat  and I am going to get back in the water. Question is WHICH water. I still have open wounds , which I will cover with Tegaderm, but I still worry about infection.

Would you stick with a lake? The pool? Which is the lesser of 2 evils?

If all you got is road rash with some background bleeding, I'd swim in the lake. Just antibiotic it afterwords.

Remember also, no pool wants you in the pool with open wounds.

Hmmm, probably the pool as long as it seems clean.  Wouldn't want to leave any opening for Naegleria fowleri (yeah, I had to look up the technical name of the little beast).  Personally, I'd wait until I was all healed up before returning to the water.  Too little to gain to risk infection.  What's a few more days?

I would be more than happy to go swimming with you. I have never seen a pool that failed to have the "No open wounds" sign up and around the pool area :P

Well, if you go to a lake you won't gross everyone else out by swimming with open wounds in a pool. Covered or not... it's gross.

Please go to a lake.

I vote for the pool.  I've had two friends in the last two years or so get a Staff infection by swimming in lake-type water with an open wound.  A Staff infection is certainly surviveable, but more importantly, would kill your training for weeks.  Can't let that happen...

Can I vote for another option of waiting it out for just a few more days until it scabs over a bit more?

Can I second that?  With all the nasty viruses floating around, it's not worth the risk.

No public pool that I know of will let you swim with open wounds.

Ok...I should clarify I guess. The rash has all but healed. I opted NOT to let it scab over but have ben applying Flamazine and keeping a dressing on it. The new skin has granulated nicely and the only "open" area is a small dot in the center, probably the size of a nickel. It has been 2 weeks since my crash.

Just did not want people to think I had great gaping bleeding gory wounds!!

For what it's worth, I did a pool swim about two weeks after my last bout of road rash.  It was healed up much like you've described and it was fine.  If anything, the chlorine dried it out a bit so I cared for it after accordingly.  I didn't want to wait another week to do a swim workout either Smile
