Subject: Open Water Swim in Western Suburbs?

Newbie question here....Where do you guys recommend to train in open water out in the western suburbs, ie Naperville area.
Have only been swimming at the local pool----first tri will be Aug. 9th Naperville Sprint.
But would like to do one more this year in open water to get my feet wet...

Also would love to get with a group out in this area.

Thanks for all the help...again..

If you're doing Naperville as your first tri, you really don't have to worry about doing an OWS...since Naperville (Centennial Beach) technically isn't an OWS. It's basically just a huge pool with a beach entry/exit. Why not just swim at Centennial Beach a few times to get a feel for it?

this is a really interesting question.  I've been a lot of places and unless you're willing to ignore the "No Swimming in man-made lake" signs, then pretty much any large apartment/condo/townhome complex is your oyster!

Other than that I have not found a place to OWS out here.

Try waking up early on Saturday mornings and heading to the city... I'm in Oak Park and do it every weekend. Ohio St. Beach has lots and lots of triathletes. I know I'm a bit closer to the city than you, but at that early in the morning you won't have to worry about traffic. Hope to see ya there!

Not fishing to get you in trouble, but have you swam in the man made pools?
Just asking as I'm not sure how hygenic it is!
As a kid back home I would swim in anything, these days I'm a little more careful.

I'm not far away from Naperville's Centenial, maybe I'll have to try that.

Centennial Beach - if you're not a Naperville resident - is cheap to get into if you show up after 5pm.  Like, just a few dollars as I recall?  And since that's the race site, no better way to train!

I live on the south side of Boughton road (Bolingbrook), the north side of the road is Naperville!  I'm as close as you can get without being a Naperville resident!
I will gie it a go next week, but I'd still like to try some kind of lake swim without driving 1 hr each way to get to Chi-town.

I work right down the road from there.  Can't swim there.  It is a retention pond for Cantera run-off.  I am sure there is a lot of gnarley stuff floatin' in there.

When I was growing up, we used to be able to swim at Blackwell forest preserve, but it has since been contaminated by the landfill.

Wow, that stinks! Sounds like you know the area well, what about spring Lake?

I know the area fairly well.  Grew up in DuPage and still live/work there.  Don't know of anyone ever swimming at Spring Lake.  I know the rules state "no swimming."

I noticed you are from Modesto.  What are you doing out in the western burbs?  I know the bay area pretty well.  I went to school in Santa Clara.

Just restless with the amount of chat in CA post. I grew up in Brookdale and swam for them, although I swam at the beach more! I have swam at almost every lake in Dupage, even the river!
