Open Water Swim in Western Suburbs?

Regular  96  Plainfield, IL |  Subject: Open Water Swim in Western Suburbs?Newbie question here....Where do you guys recommend to train in open water out in the western suburbs, ie Naperville area. |

If you're doing Naperville as your first tri, you really don't have to worry about doing an OWS...since Naperville (Centennial Beach) technically isn't an OWS. It's basically just a huge pool with a beach entry/exit. Why not just swim at Centennial Beach a few times to get a feel for it? |

I've been a lot of places and unless you're willing to ignore the "No Swimming in man-made lake" signs, then pretty much any large apartment/condo/townhome complex is your oyster! Other than that I have not found a place to OWS out here. |

Ohio St. Beach has lots and lots of triathletes. I know I'm a bit closer to the city than you, but at that early in the morning you won't have to worry about traffic. Hope to see ya there! |

Other than that I have not found a place to OWS out here. Not fishing to get you in trouble, but have you swam in the man made pools? Just asking as I'm not sure how hygenic it is! As a kid back home I would swim in anything, these days I'm a little more careful. I'm not far away from Naperville's Centenial, maybe I'll have to try that. |

I'm as close as you can get without being a Naperville resident! I will gie it a go next week, but I'd still like to try some kind of lake swim without driving 1 hr each way to get to Chi-town. |

Can't swim there. It is a retention pond for Cantera run-off. I am sure there is a lot of gnarley stuff floatin' in there. I grew up in Brookdale and swam for them, although I swam at the beach more! I have swam at almost every lake in Dupage, even the river! |
