Queen BTich 12411 , | Subject: Motorcycle wreck I'm sure people have had worse than this happen, but this is probably the one of the scariest things I've ever seen. Jess and I witnessed a motorcycle wreck Sunday morning on the way to pick up Renee for our OWS. I could see the truck sitting in the road (pulling out onto the road we were on) and could see that the cyclist did not see the truck. I saw the accident before it happend, knew exactly where he was going to hit-Very surreal. He hit the front corner of a truck, went flying through the air, hit the ground, and tumbled like a rag doll. Jess and I were right behind him, she slammed on the brakes, we jumped out of the car, she went to him as I called 911. It was a traumatic experience to see him withering in pain on the ground. The cyclist was a little stunned, started talking after a minute, so his head was ok. I didn't realize FL doesn't have helmet laws and Jess said he was lucky he had one on. He also had on a padded jacket, so he only experienced road rash on his legs. His arm and shoulder were probably broken, he couldn't move them but otherwise he was ok. He was a very lucky man, the paramedics said he would probably be ok. We were shocked all morning. The rest of the day I noticed how many motorcylists did not have helmets on; we saw 2 bicyclists on a busy road: also not wearing helmets. That just pissed me off. |

Giver 18427 | Subject: RE: Motorcycle wreck Wow, Haley. You and Jess did a good thing helping the way you did. It is scary...in college, I saw a girl get hit by a car crossing the street in a crosswalk, who died a few hours later. I still remember the huge hematoma she had on her forehead from where she hit the windshield. It gives me the creeps. As for the no-helmet crowd: they are what the Darwin Awards are meant for. Ya just can't do much for stupid people. |

As a former EMT in a state that does not require helmets, I can tell you that of the 5 motorcycle accidents I have responded to, 4 out of 5 died and that includes 2 that were wearing helmets. It is just like when we ride on the roads, we are usually safe, it is the other people you have to worry about. |

Elite 2915 New City, New York | Subject: RE: Motorcycle wreck Unfortunate you had to witness that, fortunate for him you did. Nice job. . Glad to hear he'll come out o.k. too. past july after a bike ride in the state park saw a motorcyclist being chased at high speed by a trooper. Remember thinking that guy is gonna crash. Sure enuff next day I read he smashed head on into a car, flew into the woods and died. Took his life in his own hands. Hard to feel bad for him but at least he didn't hurt the innocent people in the car. Evidently he had a long history of traffic violations. Stupid people do dtupid things I guess. |

Elite 2553 Tucson, AZ | Subject: RE: Motorcycle wreck Ouch! Good on you both for stopping and helping the poor guy. Glad to hear he was wearing a helmet and some protective gear. This is why I hardly ever ride my motorcycle on the street. Racing on the track is so much safer (and more fun!). My current racebike used to be my street bike that I commuted on. Then I got rear-ended, which ripped the subframe off of the frame. After that I turned it into a track bike, then started racing. I've never had a car pull out in front of me, rear end me, or run over me while racing on the track. |

Extreme Veteran 563 Allen, TX | Subject: RE: Motorcycle wreck yeah, texas does not have a helmet law either. i couldn't imagine riding without one though. people shop and compare cars based on the vehicles ability to withstand various high-impact hits. people STRESS over these features and finally buy the car they feel will keep them the safest. this entire process is eschewed on a motorcycle with no helmet. its simply saying "if i get hit, even once, even very mildly then i'm very very screwed". i just can't justify. i always wear my helmet on my KZ650, but i should do a better job of not wearing the shorts and flipflops |

Expert 713 WV | Subject: RE: Motorcycle wreck Good Job to you and Jess. Way to keep your heads about you. I had similar situation occur in Colo Sprgs. I didn't see the accident (hit and run) but my bro, bro-in-law and sis saw it. My view was blocked by my bro's truck. All I knew was my sis grabbed my sandwich and was pushing me out of the car say "GO! GO!" I met my bro running to the back of the truck saying the same thing. Luckily for the motorcyclist, Peterson AFB requires full gear(helmet, jacket, gloves and boots) to ride on base, plenty of witnesses chased down the vehicle, and I always care an full size sports medicine kit. The young man was soooooooo lucky. His helmet was shattered. His jeans and boots were shredded and scuffed. He did have grade 1 concussion, a couple cracked ribs and plenty of lacerations. But, again KUDO'S to you two! great job |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Motorcycle wreck Wow, this is bizarre. Patti and I were witnesses to EXACTLY the same thing, only last year in NH. There is no helmet law and the guy wasn't wearing one. We were directly behind him. Woman pulling out of a side street, biker was not paying attention and kept going, woman pulling out figures that the biker sees her...bango, right in the front fender and he flies over the hood of her truck. We were first on the scene and being a nurse, Patti takes care of him until cops and medical help arrive. We ended up having to give our statements to insurance adjusters, becuase the biker was claiming the woman in the truck was at fault. In reality, you could tell he wasn't paying attention, but insurance agent thinks he'll win in court. Edited by max 2005-11-21 8:48 PM |
