I need your advice, gentle BT'ers. Do you believe in the idea of taking a sabbatical, or more appropriately, a long break (say 3-6 mths) in between jobs. How many years should one have worked before one consider taking a longer vacation? Assuming that there is adequate financial cushion to live OK for a while.

I have enough BBW stuff to last 12 months. But if I couldn't find work after the break, then I will have to go back to Caress soap.

Maybe longer than what you had in mind, but try it anyhow.  It's good for the soul.

i had a GREAT teacher (at my JC) that went on a sabbatical to write a book (paid by the school). and he never returned, he went to a bigger school. Then again when you are co-writing a book on "witchcraft and religon" with another teacher at ASU, im sure you get good job offers.

edit: i think that after 7 years a sabbatical is good. the important thing is to not have it be "nothing time," but rather some sort of self improvment. take a class or something. that way you can say "i did XXXXX" to make myself a better person.

Sabbatical are indeed good for the soul, as long as you don't just sit around and watch reruns of Happy Days. If I took a sabbatical I would travel for a couple of months or so. As long as you have a financial cushion why not. You can always cut your sabbatical short.

My brother used to say it should be proportional to how long you've been working/studying.  e.g., you've been in school since kindergartens to college, that is 19 years.  Take 19 weeks off, at least.  If you didn't do that, add to the years you've been working.  So 26 weeks for you.

If you're taking all these time off, come visit me.

DO IT!!!! after 5 years as an atty I took a year off......sabbatical, burnout, whatever. I traveled solo backpack style for 5 months, took a trip around the world, life long dream. started in NZ and kept going west. aus, thailand, malaysia. cambodia, india, nepal, middle east europe. found my passion - underwater photography- in my travels. wasn't that expensive, budget was 100 per day which goes a long way in places. but I also paid the rent (wife stayed home), lost income and 401k but I wouldn't trade it. re entered my field making the same income as when I left

I think sabbaticals are highly though of assuming you can afford it and more importantly you have a reason. For instance most in the working world would frown on you taking a sabbatical to train for Triathlon, but would approve of a sabbatical to go study something business related.

Sabbaticals are not just time off they are time to grow and learn. 21 days off at a rehab center is not a sabbatical (though a husband of a friend claimed he was on a sabbatical when he was in rehab).

If you take a break from work it is a break.
