If he does not use it?
Just out of curiosity.

A typical conversation:
You still have that mtg at 11 am w/ so-and-so? (Me, gently reminding him)
Huh, what? Oh, I don't know. (my boss)
I think you do, I have it on the calendar (me)
Oh, yeah, I guess so. I guess I forgot. (him)

Now, as an adult running a business and owner of a blackberry that you use all the time, that your fabulous assistant *updates all the time*, wouldn't it be common practice for you to maybe *look* at what you have scheduled for the day, say, when you wake up? Or maybe when you get to work? You know, just to check? Not to mention to validate why you bought the darn thing in the first place (and why you demand your assistant update alll the time).
Just wondering...

end of venting.
thanks, I feel better.

Looks like you've trained him pretty well NOT to learn how to use it, you workplace enabler, you.  Maybe a *cough cough* "sick" day on a day when he has an important meeting scheduled might shock him into acting like a grown up.

Well when I am in a position to have an assistant, ill be sure to PM you, I love my Treo. (took my coworkers 2 weeks to understand that me "fiddling" with it when they are talking means im adding notes... ie im REALLY listening. Sometimes if someone is telling me something and its important, and im not puitting it in my Treo, they will say "so you gonna enter it...." i too am SOOOO forgetful (ie way too much multitasking), so i live by my Treo!!!!

edit: calling out sick might be good for your boss.

I'm going to be honest here: I have tried all the tricks in the book as far as Tania's tip. Sometime I toss a 'tude, or a 'I don't know, what does it say on your calendar" but it doesn't have any impact. He wanders around clueless and people get upset because he can't keep his **** together. I thought when I came on board he just needed a very together on top of it assistant, but alas...I can't do the thinking for him...I'm close to the end of a very educatioal but frustrating year of being the assistant do it all extraordinaire, and I'm ready to move on but need to stick around for another couple month for financial reasons - hoping I can make it (blackberry woes very much the least of it)

Well then I stand corrected. Sorry, lady.  You are right to be looking elsewhere.  Life's too short, for goodness sake, don't spend it unhappy at work!

Good luck to you!

From my experience, so many people running their own business are idots. Maybe that is part of the reason why so many new businesses fail within the first 5 years...

You gotta mess with their heads some. Every once in a while, when they're telling you something important and you're entering it into the PDA, suddenly say "HIGH SCORE!!", look at them and say "I'm sorry were you talking to me?"

I realise that I am probably going to step in "IT", but if your boss was efficient, and could manage his time, he wouldn't need an assistant. Be thankful, and make him more dependent on you.

It's what my wife does for me. I may think I am the "Boss", but my kids know the Real truth.
