ejshowers - 2012-10-17 9:18 AM I was there way back in 1984 when I was studying abroad. Beautiful old city and was dirt cheap back then. I remember beer was about the cheapest thing you could order to drink :-)
I was there in '97, '98, and '99. It was cheap then too. But I hear it has become something like Paris where you have tourist areas that are very expensive and local areas where they don't speak a lick of english, but they're really polite and want to help you that are significantly cheaper. Those polite areas are not very clean, but I believe it's still pretty safe there.
Very similar comments from me about BudaPest.
If you're looking for a really cool place to go in the CZRep, czech-out (sorry, couldn't resist) Chesky Krumlov. Awesome place. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%8Cesk%C3%BD_Krumlov
The Beer there is top-notch, they make lots of great, cheap lace, crystal, and other textiles.
One story from Prague. A buddy and I were traveling there. We wandered down an alley and found a downstairs restaurant with a czech budweiser sign on it. We sat down at the table and the waitress sat this french couple with us (this is common, to fill-up a table in any restaurant). We did the point and pray with the menu. When our food came, it looked good and smelled good, but it was something with a small rib cage still intact and it wasn't chicken... "Uhhh, what's this?"
We looked around and realized the restaurant was called "2 cats"..."uhh, am I eating cat?"
Then we asked the waitress with lots of hand-signals "What's this?" and she makes wisker motions, then we start getting nervous until she puts her hands up on her head and hops. "OOOOOHHH!!! Rabbit!!! Well then, let's eat!!" Beer was about 1/2 price of a coke.
