![]() Trying to keep my failing dog interested in eating so I cooked some liver last night. I sauteed it in a little oil - that stuff smelled awful. Made the entire house stink the rest of the night but my dog loved it. She walked straight over to the stove as soon as she could smell it. Is there a better way for me to cook this without it smelling so bad? I decided I could not go on any of the reality shows were you have to eat gross stuff because I was truly getting sick to my stomach just from cooking it!

Seriously? I'd come over for a liver and onions dinner! NOM! Ad always butter, not oil. Quick dredge in flour, black pepper and salt, then sautée in butter. NOM! |

was liver specifically recommended by the vet? can you just choose something else? mix egg yolks in his food, steam veggies, boiled chicken, etc. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Try putting it in a pot with some water on a low boil. I did this with my sick kitty when he wouldn't eat. There really isn't much smell, and certainly not anywhere near the stench of frying it(I still cringe thinking of that smell from when I was a kid on 'liver night') You can also boil some carrots or sweet potatos in with the liver. |

She likely has a brain tumor and is having lots of trouble. She had not eaten for two days. Some friends said liver worked well for their dogs when they had similar issues and we had some in the freezer. |

This is a great idea. Thank you. She really loves it and keeps going back into the kitchen to check her food bowl so I don't mind giving it to her as long as I don't stink up the house. The cats love it too so all the pets might as well eat it up rather than me throwing it out. Liver night sounds scary..... We used to have sour gravy with fish and stewed tomatoes night. Sour gravy is made with vinegar. "Shudder" |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For pet consumption, like Littlecat suggested, simmer it for a while (you could also try chicken livers, which would be more of a single-serving for kitty). Growing up, we had liver and onions regularly. Our cat liked it far better than I did. One evening, I offered a small bite of my liver to our cat who skeptically sniffed it and then ate it. I offered another bite with less sniffing and by the third bite, no more sniffing, so I offered him a piece of onion which he ate without sniffing. The next bite got skeptical sniffing again. We've spared our children that meal. |

+1 ! I haven't had it in ages, but the Navy used to serve it to us at least once a week. I grew to really like it.
As for cooking it, some folks suggest soaking it in milk overnight before cooking to give it a milder flavor; though, if you are cooking it for a pet, that isn't likely needed. It might help with the smell, though. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd find a restaurant that serves it and pick up a double carry out order. Mince it up and store some in the fridge and freeze the rest. Have you tried cooked ground beef? Wet cat food? |

Used to just feed mine ground beef (rinsed to remove most of the fat) and rice when they would get finicky. Sometimes I'd sprinkle some turmeric on the rice as it cooked - it's good for calming an upset stomach. |

Someone mentioned giving their pet onions with the liver--please don't give onions to dogs or cats, it is toxic to them... |
