Subject: If you don't celebrate Christmas....

For those who don't celebrate Christmas, do you find it offensive when someone wishes you Merry Christmas or to you just take it in the spirit that it is intended (as a cheerful greeting at holiday time)?

I was just thinking about this because I was going to a bunch of blogs today wishing lots of people Merry Christmas.  Most I don't know well enough to know if they do or don't celebrate.  Although I figure I am pretty safe if they mention Christmas, trees, church service, presents and Santa.  Maybe I'm just bored and thinking too much.

D.

If I wish someone "Merry Christmas" (and I didn't know they don't celebrate) and they get offended, then that's their problem.  People choose how they react to anything.  If they want to find something negative and offensive in this, then they can plant one on my butt!  Then they will really have something to get offended about

I would hope people don't get offended by that.  I find it sad that in this day in age that people look for things to be offended about.  Being offended is 100% in your own power.  You chose to be offended or not.  No one can truly offend you, it is up to you.

Happy holidays to all!

I don't think i've ever offended anyone by wishing Merry christmas.  I always look at it as a well wish.  I cant understand why anyone would get offended.  Im happy if people wish me Happy Hanukkah, because its a nice thing to do!

It's about the intent.  If you intend to wish them well and they get offended, then that's their problem.  These are the people that also get offended when you say, "Bless You" when they sneeze.

I'd be just as happy if someone wished me a Happy 6th of February.  It's about being nice.  But, alas, people forget that.

I've taken to "Peace be with you", similar to the Islamic greeting of "Allah's peace be upon you" or "happy holidays". I work at a place with a lot of varying nationalities/backgrounds, and it always seems to brighten someone's day.

I look at it this way, I'm not a morning person...at all. But, if you want to wish me a good morning I promise I won't get offended.

Well said, Brad.

I don't get the holiday greeting controversy. If someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, I do not get offended. If they wish me Happy Holidays, I do not get offended.  If they wish me a Cool Yule, Pleasant Solstice, Happy Hannukah, or Awesome Festivus, I do not get offended, instead, I wish them the same.  Taking umbrage at someone's 2-second effort to be civil - whatever form it takes - seems to be against the spirit of the season.

Don't get my hopes up!!  I cry really easily and it would hurt if I don't get a Happy Feb 6th.
