Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can I join? I havent been able to train that much for the second half of this year and really need a mentor. I have a lot of trouble balancing training so I dont get sick or injured so Im thinking this group would be REALLY good for me because I need a lot of help in that area. (consistency and moderation are two areas I could really do with some help in!) NAME: Cat/Catherine/Super Cat After a difficult couple of years juggling my health then trying to get back into training but putting myself on crutches, developing runners knee, shin splints and plantar fascitis etc I finally managed to race again in late 2008 in a Super Sprint race. In 2009 I took 14 women from the office through their first race including my finishing a sprint... it was painfully slow but I did it! I also managed to finish a swim in Sydney harbour and sprain my ankle in another race having my first DNF. Then in May 2009 I also ran a 4k race and finished after jogging most of it and only walking a little bit (yay me!) Since then however i have been battling my Colitis again and its really causing me a lot of dramas. A bit of training is good for the mind and body! I just have to watch my hydration and energy levels very closely! Ive been both a mentor and a mentee in the past but while I seem to have had luck helping others I have a lot of trouble working out what I should do and when, especially now when I feel like Im starting over again. There is a race on the first weekend of March Id really like to do... there are both sprint and super sprint options. In terms of my abilities - Im a sold swimmer (just probably should do some swimming), Love to ride (and adore pro cycling) and cannot run at all... plus i need to actually do some of that to. What I really need is help planning a basic week and what I need to be doing regularly since Im an all or nothing kind of girl which is probably why Ive had so many injuries!!! While sometimes all I can do is rest with my health I would like to find some balance... Ive always wanted to one day do a HIM but right now Id be happy to train regularly, stay healthy and finish a few races in 2010
THIS YEAR'S RACES: Im in Australia so my last race season was 2008/2009 October: Triathlon Pink 300m/10k/3k February: TriNSW All Womens Sprint Triathlon 500m/20k/5k March: Sydney Harbour Swim 1k April: Cronulla Enticer Triathlon 250m/1k/2.5k - DNF May: Mothers Day Classic - 4k 2010 RACES: March: Tri NSW All Womens Triathlon May: Mothers Day Classic - 4k October: All Womens Triathlon and/or Triathlon Pink Anything else tbc - maybe some runs in the off season (May - Sept) - if I get myself running consistently! WEIGHTLOSS: Yes please! Im still carrying half the weight I gained in 2006/2007 from the medication I was on. I find when I exercise regularly I eat better so thats kind of how i like to loose weight. I would rather be fit and healthy than skinny but I know with my running which I struggle and avoid that losing a bit of weight would make it much easier. Cheers Cat |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi -- I'd really like to join your mentor group. Here's my background: NAME: Steve I started in May 2009 (all my workouts are logged here at BT). My goals for 2010 are to do a couple of sprints, and to finish the summer with an Oly. I am currently training on a 56-week plan for an Olympic distance triathlon from Gale Bernhardt. I'm slow, but I get better and better every week. I'm not going to podium, but I want to be competitive.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: Channel Island 4th of July 10k (PR 54:50)2010 RACES: Not yet decided WEIGHTLOSS: Starting January 2nd, I'll be trying to drop 15 more pounds. I've gone from 240 to 215 over the last year or so. I'd love to be down to 200 by the end of April. Why I'd make a good mentee: I'm very positive and upbeat about training. I'd like to share experiences with other members of the group. Also, I do have questions. Thanks! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome! Cat - the key to tri fitness (or any fitness for that matter) is consistency. Developing a basic week is a great idea. Look at your life, work, etc and carve out times slots for your workouts. Write these down and then stick to it. Steve - I like Gale's plans. I used those when I first got into triathlon. Losing 15 pounds by April is a realistic goal. Nutrition and exercise will get you there. I'm excited to start working with you guys. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can I join? Your race calendar peaks my interest as that I WAS hopeful to do NOLA this year (2010), however after ACL replacement last year (June 2009) and still really being a rookie, there's no way I could've been ready... so now I have my sights on NOLA 2011. IF there's a La tri in June, I may convince hubby to let me bring my gear, I'd love the opportunity to race in my home state. I have a bad habit of letting life get n the way of my training ![]() NAME: Heather STORY: I was talked into this - tri's - by a former co-worker who convinced me I could learn to swim. Then I dared my husband to join me. ![]() FAMILY STATUS: Married and two boys (6-1/2 and 3-1/2) CURRENT TRAINING: Running through Wal-Mart, dodging grocery carts at lightspeed, never sitting at work while organizing 480 kids to play basketball, etc. I'm supposed to be participating in the Nat'l challenge with my local club, however I haven't made a workout yet ![]() I was finally cleared to run on grass in November, so I haven't done ANY kind of serious running since May of 2009. THIS YEAR's RACES (2009): SLC 1/2 Mary Salem Sprint Tri Little Red Riding Hood (63mi) Knee surgery ![]() 2010 Races: Women of Steel (all women pool) Little Red Riding Hood Century Yuba State Park (will be first Olympic) *May add another 6K trail Run and at least one or two more OWS sprints WIEGHTLOSS: yes, please ![]() I look forward to meeting new people here at BT (though Cat and I have been ol' chaps for some time here - I promise I'm not trying to stalk you Cat! ;-) ) I also look forward to learning any tips you may have in terms of training for high humidity when living in dry climate (and please don't tell me to set my bike trainer up on the pool deck or in the sauna, I think I'd get claustrophobic in the sauna for a 3 hour ride) THANKS !!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!! Heather |

Developing a basic week is a great idea. Look at your life, work, etc and carve out times slots for your workouts. Write these down and then stick to it. Thanks - I think one of my biggest challenges is the basic week.. I fear I may attempt too much and then when I cant hit everything I planned on doing I get a bit disheartened. Do you have any recommendations on what you think is the best place to start? Theoretically I know I easily have an hour most weekdays at least to train and couple of hours (or even more some weekends) each day on the weekends but also know I completely over do it with what I attempt to... (what over think it? me? well of course....) Edited by kaqphin 2009-12-21 3:15 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can I join? I'm a runner - but a slow one! I've been running since the first craze in the 70's, and started going long in the last 10 years. Here's what I've generally run: 3.5 Miler Corporate Challenge in May - 28 minutes Several 5 K's and trail races in May/June - PR is 23:23 October - Hudson Mohawk Marathon - still trying to break 4 hours. I've had my share of over-use issues with running, and today did my first "pool running" after taking my 8 year old for his first ski lesson! I've been doing this little Indoor Love 2 Tri (15 minutesx3) for the last 4 years too. Here's what I'm planning to add in 2010: February 14 - Love2Tri - Clifton Park NY YMCA. July 2010 - Pine Bush Triathlon I love to bike - and actually bought a souped up commuter last Summer - logged 100's of miles, but didn't go more than 30 miles at one time. Spinning and the computer bike from Expresso fill these cold dark days lately. I still have my 20 year old mountain bike, and on sunny days I'll take that out for a while. I'd like to learn to ride better. And swim - and run - and eat. Our 2 boys (8 and 15) keep my busy and if my wife wasn't such a great cook I'd probably still need to exercise a lot to avoid being huge. Edited by benjaminjacobso 2009-12-21 6:08 PM |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tommy, If its not too late I really like to join your group. NAME: jhoyt1 / Jamie STORY: I stumbled accross Tri on a hiking trip to Lake Placid in 2008. I went into a store and found all this great stuff on triathlons and decided to check into it. I did some research and started training in the spring of 2009. I did one sprint triathlon in 2009. I had done some cycling and running prior to 2009 but no real swimming so that was a big challenge. FAMILY STATUS: Married CURRENT TRAINING: I trained fairly regularly through the spring/summer but laid off during the fall due to some knee problems. I am looking to start training this winter with the goal of competing in several local sprint triathlons in 2010 and maybe 1 oly. I have a family and demanding job so training in the early morning seems to be the best balance. I usually swim during my lunch hour so swim workouts usually are limited to 30 mins in the pool. I think my inconsistency may have caused some of my knee problems in 2009 and I would like to work on consistency/moderation to ensure I don't repeat in 2010 (part of what I found encouraging in your Bio!) THIS YEAR'S RACES: In 2009 I raced: Broome County Sprint Tri 2010 RACES: Multiple Sprint Tri (1) OLY WEIGHTLOSS: I lost about 20 lb training in 2009 and would like to loose 10-15 more before by the start of the season in 2010 (end of may) |

(what over think it? me? well of course....) Kat, try this. Your basic week should have 3 Key Workouts - long swim, long bike and long run. 'Long' is relative your your goal race distance. You don't miss the 3 Key Workouts; no matter what you don't miss these. The rest of the time between the Key Workouts are 'filler' workouts. Give your self permission to miss a few of the filler workouts if necessary. For example - Monday - long swim; Thursday - long run; Saturday - long bike. The other days you add shorter workouts in each sport. Possibly add a couple of strength training sessions, too. And definitely don't over think it. It's not that complicated. Just be consistent - day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. |
